Adventure and education—both by film and by travel—will be the focus of the next meeting of the Luther College Woman’s Club (LCWC), to be held Tuesday, January 21, at 1:30 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union, on the Luther campus.
Nancy Sojka, president of the Oneota Film Festival (OFF) Board of Directors, will present “Oneota Film Festival XI: Inform. Inspire. Engage,” while Molly Holkesvik, Decorah High School English teacher, will present “Decorah Schools: European and Washington, D.C., Trips” with Maddie Putnam, a current DHS senior and a recent tour participant.
During her presentation, Sojka will discuss how the OFF board selects films and prepares for the festival as well as share a couple films that will be part of this year’s event. The festival will be held February 16-19, 2020, at Luther and in downtown Decorah. Holkesvik will provide an overview of trips that she helps lead for area students, including a trip to Washington, D.C., after the eighth-grade year and a trip to Europe for high school students. Among the topics she and Putnam will address are the following: who goes, where they go, what they learn, and how travel helps students develop compassion, empathy, self-awareness, independence, and social and teamwork skills.
All women from Decorah and surrounding communities are invited to attend. Shuttle service from the Decorah Swimming Pool is available and leaves at 1:10 p.m. A short business meeting, refreshments, and special music are also on the afternoon’s agenda.
