Winneshiek County Development and Tourism has joined forces with area childcare representatives, providers and partners to host a special showing of the featured documentary, No Small Matter.
No Small Matter is a featured documentary confronting America's most pressing problem and reveals the tragic costs and positive economic payoffs for our children, families, communities and country when done right.
Stephanie Fromm, Executive Director for Winneshiek County Development and Tourism, noted “Our organization has been working diligently on addressing and creating the awareness of our local child care crisis. With support from area partner organizations, we have the ability to learn more about the industry, profession and struggles many families face when looking to enter the workforce. We are excited to collaborate with these providers and partners to host a night together.”
“Iowa leads the nation in the number of working parents and at the same time has a child care shortage of an estimated 350,000 slots, while child care providers are leaving the field at an alarming rate.” Stated Jill Herink, Executive Director for Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children. “It is critical to elevate our discussions about the child care crisis and at the same time the workforce crisis in Iowa. We do not have the availability of quality child care we need to meet the needs of our workforce or our youngest Iowans. We need to figure out a solution to help child care and early childhood professionals to earn a wage that they can live on to retain this critical profession.”
"Early childhood care and development are being addressed by policy makers at both the state and national level. Policy makers need to hear from the people who are most impacted by the decisions they will make: working parents and the providers of childcare. No Small Matter is a great opportunity for our local community interested in and concerned about Iowa's childcare crisis. This provides for a healthy discussion of the best way forward in meeting the needs of Iowa's youngest children." Matt Tapscott, President, Iowa Family Child Care Association and Child Development Home provider, Decorah.
This event is open to the public and is brought to you by Winneshiek County Development and Tourism, Child Care Resource and Referral of Northeast Iowa, Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children, HAWC Partnerships for Children, Luther College Center for Sustainable Communities and Iowa Family Child Care Association.
