PHASE 1 REOPENING PLAN

Below is the partial overview of procedures and policies for the reopening of our visitor center during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are planning a visit, please read thoroughly to avoid confusion or disappointment. You can also see a PDF of our full reopening plan, which also includes the reasoning behind our policies here. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

UPDATE (3/26/30): Our center is now closed until further notice, in accordance with the emergency procedures laid out by our supervising department, the Wapello County Conservation Board, who are following the guidance of the State of Iowa. We are also cancelling our first American Gothic Open House Day, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 11. We will continue monitoring the situation with the COVID-19 crisis as we move forward, and hope to resume our regular hours and events as soon as we can, in accordance with guidance from the government and public health officials.

If you have any questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to reach out. See below for our previous release regarding our initial closure due to the current situation, which includes resources for individuals related to COVID-19 and finding information and resources during this difficult time.

Thanks so much, and please stay safe!

- The American Gothic House Center

Stop by between 10am and 4pm to get a rare inside look at the Gothic House. No booking or tickets required, and admission is free. Our adjacent visitor center will be open its usual hours of 10am to 5pm. For more details on our visitor center, which is open every day, year-round (excluding major holidays), click here.

As this event is made possible by our volunteers who generously donate their time, please ensure you arrive with enough time to see the Gothic House before it closes at 4pm.

PLEASE NOTE: Visitors to the house will only be allowed to tour the ground floor, as the stairs to the second floor are steep, winding, and have no handrail. In addition, the House is not easily accessible for individuals with mobility issues, as there is a slight hill leading up to the house, 2 steps to get onto the porch, and one step to get inside the house.
