Town Trivia
Katherine Sansone
Had a winner! Ron Outland had the correct question: What was Chester to answer: With the demise of the town of Prattville, in August 1911 Edith Martin and the Olsen’s hired Everett M. Cameron to survey and subdivide their respective properties, thus officially forming this town. Ron won 10% off any service product at the gym from Lake Almanor fitness our sponsor this week.
Answer courtesy of Steve Fleming: Skiing began in the 1920s in Lassen National Park with a chair lift built in 1956 and an A frame chalet added in 1964. With skiing becoming, Lassen began promoting with this slogan.

Collins Welcomed 38 Students from the UC Berkeley School
Terra Ayers, Collins Pine
Last week, Collins welcomed 38 Students from the UC Berkeley School of Natural Resources and two local US Forest Service Employees to the mill to introduce the students to sustainable woods and sawmilling operations with a focus on sound forest management. While at Collins, the students were able to observe uneven-aged silviculture, restoration activities, and the connection between healthy forests, sawmills and healthy communities. As one can imagine, the Dixie Fire and the importance of managed forests was a major focus this year.
UC Berkeley School of Natural Resources students have toured the mill each year since the 1960’s. A huge thank you to our Forester, Andy Juska for leading the charge to spark passion in the next generation for responsible forest management!
Community Connectivity Plan Meeting
Jennie Mathews, Chamber Board Director
The Community Connectivity Planning Team held a Community Workshop last Wednesday, July 20th, at the Almanor Rec Center in Chester. It was attended by around twenty community members, and great discussion and suggestions abounded. The planning team did a wonderful job formatting the meeting. It started with an overview of the current project and phases, and then all community members were invited to discuss ideas with the team and help with interactive maps and project ideas.
The planning team printed out a large map of Main Street in Chester, and asked community members to write and/or draw congested areas, crosswalk suggestions, areas of concern, and business/social centers where there may be more people congregating. There was also a large print out of suggested “Complete Streets” roadwork ideas, such as sidewalks, designated or shared bike lanes, curb bulb-outs, crosswalks, etc. All community members could place orange (like) or green (dislike) sticky dots on the suggestions. All of the presentations showed that the planning team is trying their best to involve the community and receive ideas and suggestions. This connectivity project is going to be a group effort, embedded with ideas from Chester locals.
The planning team reminded all participants that this Community Connectivity Plan is for the residents of Chester – as Chester grows with increasing tourism, the town must grow with it. We currently have no sidewalks in most of town, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road to get anywhere. Crosswalks are unlit and dangerous, residents and out-of-towners alike speed through town, and most newbies to Chester don’t even know where to turn into parking areas because the road shoulders are so wide.
This Plan will produce a roadmap to implement improvements along Main Street/SR 36 that serve a variety of transportation needs using "Complete Streets" planning and design elements. "Complete Streets" improvements aim to provide safer and more comfortable transportation options for people of all ages and abilities while enhancing public spaces for community activity along the corridor. This Plan was initiated by Plumas County Transportation Commission (PCTC) and is funded by Caltrans’ Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program. This Plan aims to transform Chester Main Street/SR 36 into a "Complete Street" by providing safer and more comfortable transportation options for people of all ages and abilities. The Plan will examine existing limitations to the highway’s function as a vibrant Main Street, including the lack of sidewalks, bike lanes, and adequate public spaces for community activity.
This Plan is also a timely opportunity to reconsider the function of SR 36 as Lake Almanor’s economy rebounds from the impacts of both COVID-19 and the devastating 2021 Dixie Fire, recognizing the highway’s role as a regional connection through Plumas County.
Improvement recommendations for Chester Main Street will be developed in partnership with the community to create a plan that works for residents, business owners, and visitors to Chester.
Everyone is encouraged to attend one of the upcoming planning meetings (dates and times TBA), or if you can’t make it, post on the “Idea Wall” or the “Interactive Map” available on the planning website – www.chestermainstreet.com. Those with direct questions can send in comments via the “Contact Us” page on the website.
Stover Landing Building in Chester Gets a Special Visitor
Story and Video by Christopher Wong
Last week, the building that houses Cravings, B&B Booksellers, Lake Almanor Area Chamber office and The Almanor Foundation office received a special visitor. Christopher Wong and his family came to Chester to learn more about his grandmother's history. He writes:
"I was invited to join my family in Chester for a visit. This was an opportunity to take a stroll down my grandma's family's history lane. My grandmother's sister Shirley Mae married Harry Kan after WWII. They moved to a house that he built in Chester when Auntie Charmaine was eight years old and entering the 3rd grade. She was the first class in the new Chester Elementary school for fourth grade. We met for lunch at a Café called Cravings, which was the house Uncle Harry built. We were able to walk upstairs to visit auntie Charmaine's old room. I met her friends as they ate lunch for a mini 1957 Class reunion. Part Two will have stories from her elementary schools and a visit to Home Market. Uncle Teddy ran the grocery store and Uncle Harry was the butcher. A few of Grandma's siblings took their turns running the store. This was a great visit that helped complete the stories my family used to talk about."

Almanor Fishing Report
John Crotty 7/24/22
There has been little change since last week’s report, water temp is increasing daily, currently sitting at 73 degrees, clarity is unchanged. We will see daytime highs reaching into the low 90’s for at least the next seven days with minimal winds.
The bite has been early and tough, action slows when the sun comes up. Bank fishing has also been tough with Hamilton Branch your best shot at catching fish from shore, it too is an early morning late evening bite. Start your day in deep water sections of the lake, Rec#1 to the A-Frame, Big Cove into Auggie’s Ally, Big Springs and Dorado. Slow trolling is the preferred method, if the wind picks up switch to hardware.
The 2022 Hex Hatch is over, and pond smelt will be the main food source on Almanor for the balance of this year. Bass fishermen with knowledge of the lake are catching quality smallies, Mark Pilgrim is a local guide and fishes on the Wild West Bass Tour you can visit his Facebook site to see posts on the bass bite.
The Oak Fire created poor air quality here in Plumas County today, the smoke/haze will be intermittent depending on winds.
Please note: AFA’s annual Family Picnic is scheduled for this Saturday July 30th seating will be limited and we will NOT be selling tickets at the door. Time is running out to purchase tickets. This is our major fundraiser, if you would like to support AFA and help us fund our fish pen program and support our Veterans and youth fishing events, please come and enjoy a New York steak dinner with us at the beautiful Rec # 1 in the Lake Almanor Country Club.
