What we are up to?

The streets of Quincy will be filled with ghouls, superheroes, and princesses tomorrow for the annual Safe Trick or Treat. We are thrilled to see our community come together for this fun, spooky, and safe event.

Many, many thanks to the great kids with QHS's S Club, and some of the members of FRC's baseball team for helping with traffic control this year!

Copies of this year's Treasure Maps are available at The Quincy Hub; there's a limited supply, so stop by early in your trick-or-treating rounds! The maps are free and direct you to participating merchants outside the Main Street area.

The maps are also available on our website at https://www.quincychamber.com/safe-trick-or-treat; keep the digital copy handy on your phone, or print a copy at home!

Save the Date for our next Mixer: Monday, November 17th!

Come tour Plumas County's first and only medical spa, enjoy some light snacks and drinks, and possibly win a door prize!

Compliments of the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, A L'Orange Medical Spa, and Nourishing Newborns!

After that, it's time for Black Friday & Small Business Saturday! Business owners: If you own a store or a restaurant, let us know by Wednesday, November 19th of your business hours and whether you'll offer any sales or specials on November 28th & 29th; we're doing the Black Friday/Small Business Saturday flyers again this year!

The end of Daylight-Saving Time is coming up soon!

On Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 2:00 a.m., we’ll get that extra hour back. Don’t forget to set your clocks back so you’re all prepared for the switch!

There is Help to Keep the Cupboard Stocked

Because the U.S. Congress has not passed a federal budget yet for the year, many federal agencies are shut down, federal employees’ paychecks are delayed, and some benefits are paused and could be delayed for the month of November even if the government reopens. Perhaps most directly impactful for many families is the delay of CalFresh food benefits.

It’s hard enough to get by in California without this kind of disruption. A missed paycheck or delayed benefits can quickly lead to hard times when the cupboards might already have been empty at the end of the month.

From small church food closets to well-organized meal programs, there are resources available to prevent people from going hungry in lean times – though it’s a painful fact that many will be stretched thin if this shutdown persists.

There are too many programs across the 14 counties of the 1st Senate District to list in one email, but I’m writing to share some key central resources that serve as local hubs.

First of all, from almost anywhere in California you can call 211 and be connected to live help to navigate service needs.

While the number works anywhere, 211 systems are managed locally, and each provider maintains a website with resources in each county.  Here are the different sites around the North State.

Butte and Glenn Counties: helpcentral.org
Nevada and Placer Counties: 211connectingpoint.org
Plumas, Shasta, Siskiyou and Tehama Counties: 211norcal.org

In addition, Partnership HealthPlan of California has provided resources for the counties listed above and others not fully covered by 211 services.  Click here and then follow the link for your county for a comprehensive list of local resources.

I hope this political standoff in Washington can be resolved promptly, but in the meantime, I hope we can continue to care for one another and that no child has to go to bed hungry.

New Quincy Elementary School Garden

The Lost Sierra Food Project is celebrating the completion of the new Alder Campus Garden at Quincy Elementary School, a project timed with the end of National Farm to School Month. Built in collaboration with students and staff to replace an older garden, the new space features seven raised beds and a collaborative art panel painted by all 200 QES students.

The legacy of the original garden lives on through saved seeds that were planted in the new beds. The garden is already a success, with its first harvests of kale and lettuce donated to the Plumas Crisis Intervention and Resource Center food bank. Summer produce was also used in school taste tests and the free lunch program. With the school year underway, students are fully utilizing the new space for hands-on activities like nature journaling, harvesting, and making marigold garlands.
