State of the City 2026: Driving Vision, Opportunity, & Community

As many of you may have seen, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce recently announced a leadership transition. Executive Board Member Jacob Shaw has been appointed Interim President & CEO and is working closely with Chamber staff and the Board of Directors to ensure continuity of operations and continued service to our members and the West Hollywood business community. The Chamber remains focused on its mission of advocating for local business, fostering economic vitality, and delivering meaningful programs, events, and opportunities that help our members thrive.

That commitment will be on full display at one of our most anticipated events of the year: the 2026 State of the City, taking place on Tuesday, June 23 at The London West Hollywood Hotel at Beverly Hills from 11 AM to 1:30 PM.

This year's theme, Unbridled Momentum: Driving Vision, Opportunity, and Community, reflects the energy and opportunity shaping West Hollywood's future. As our city prepares to welcome millions of visitors for Pride celebrations this weekend and all month long, continues planning for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and sees significant new investment across its commercial districts, West Hollywood remains a place where innovation, entrepreneurship, and community come together to create lasting impact.

A highlight of State of the City each year is the featured panel discussion, a lively and informative conversation that brings together leaders from across West Hollywood’s business and civic landscape. This year’s panel will spotlight the key economic engines driving momentum across the city, including hospitality, tourism, design, entertainment, and small business, while exploring how collaboration, placemaking, advocacy, and strategic investment are shaping West Hollywood’s future. Always a fan favorite, the panel offers a candid, forward-looking look at the opportunities and challenges ahead for our business community.

We are especially proud to honor hospitality visionary Ian Schrager, whose influence has helped redefine the modern hotel experience around the world. Schrager's latest project, PUBLIC West Hollywood, is set to open on July 15, marking an exciting new chapter for the Sunset Strip and further reinforcing West Hollywood's reputation as a global destination for hospitality, culture, and creativity.

State of the City brings together business leaders, elected officials, community stakeholders, and residents to celebrate our city's accomplishments and explore the opportunities ahead. We invite you to join us for this important conversation, connect with fellow leaders, and be part of shaping the next chapter of West Hollywood's success story.

Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are still available, but space is limited. We encourage you to secure your place today and join us as we celebrate the momentum driving our city forward.

Advocacy in Action: How to Request Chamber Support

If your business or organization has a project or issue where Chamber advocacy could help, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has a formal process to review requests for support. Requests are limited to WHCC Members in good standing seeking support for development projects, business initiatives, or policy matters.

The Chamber’s Governmental Affairs Committee (GAC) meets every second Tuesday of the month, so requests should be submitted to the WHCC President & CEO at least 10 business days prior to a GAC meeting. If the request is found to fall within the purview of the GAC, Chamber staff will invite the applicant to give a short presentation at an upcoming GAC meeting.

Applicants will have the opportunity to answer questions before the GAC deliberates and votes in Closed Session, sending its recommendation to the WHCC Board of Directors for final consideration. If approved, the Chamber may provide a letter of support and/or testify on behalf of the project at relevant Commission or City Council meetings.

For more information about submitting a support request, please contact the Chamber office to request submission guidelines and upcoming meeting dates. If you already have the submission guidelines, please send your request to admin@wehochamber.com.

From Service to SweetWater — Bernie Gambino's Next Chapter

This month, we're excited to spotlight someone whose connection to West Hollywood spans decades. Bernadette "Bernie" Gambino has spent much of her life serving the community, first through nearly 27 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, including service at the West Hollywood Station, and now as the founder of SweetWater WeHo, one of the city's newest LGBTQ-owned businesses.

For Bernie, the inspiration behind SweetWater came in the years following the pandemic. As she watched businesses close throughout West Hollywood, she also recognized something that had been missing for far too long: a dedicated space where lesbians could gather, connect, and feel fully seen. Rather than waiting for someone else to create that space, she decided to build it herself.

Located in the heart of the Rainbow District, SweetWater is designed to be more than a nightlife venue. It's a place rooted in community, connection, and belonging. Bernie hopes guests will find an environment where people can show up authentically, celebrate who they are, and feel welcomed from the moment they walk through the door.

That commitment to community isn't new for Bernie. Giving back has always been central to her life and leadership philosophy. Whether serving in law enforcement or launching a new business, she's motivated by creating spaces where people feel valued and supported. As she puts it, helping others feel like they matter is one of the most important things a person can do.

As a business owner, Bernie is focused on bringing people together and creating experiences that are innovative, exciting, and fun. While SweetWater was created with the lesbian community in mind, its mission is broader: fostering connection, building community, and creating memorable experiences for everyone who visits.

Opening just ahead of Pride season, SweetWater arrives at an exciting moment for West Hollywood. As the city welcomes visitors from around the world, Bernie is looking forward to introducing both residents and visitors to a new gathering place that reflects the diversity, energy, and spirit of the community she has called home for so many years.

When she's not focused on opening and operating SweetWater, Bernie finds peace near the water, taking time to reflect, recharge, and appreciate life's simple moments. It's a balance that helps fuel the resilience and determination behind a personal mantra she carries into every challenge: "Never, never, never give up."

As SweetWater opens its doors on June 5, Bernie is eager to welcome the community into the next chapter of her West Hollywood story, one built on service, connection, and creating a place where everyone can feel at home.

Help Preserve Funding for the West Hollywood Green Business Program

A Call to Action

West Hollywood Green Business Program – FY27–FY28 Budget Update

The City of West Hollywood is currently reviewing its proposed two year FY27–FY28 budget, which includes a potential pause in funding for the West Hollywood Green Business Program (WeHo GBP).

Launched in 2024, the program provides free sustainability and operational efficiency support to local businesses through one-on-one technical assistance, including energy and water savings guidance, waste reduction strategies, rebate navigation, and Green Business Certification support.

To date, WeHo GBP has supported 45 local businesses, recognizing 25 of them with official Green Certifications, and helped distribute more than $28,000 in rebates and mini-grants, while helping participating businesses reduce operating costs and resource use. Participating businesses have collectively reduced over 1.58 million pounds of CO₂ emissions, conserved more than 576,000 gallons of water, saved over 117,000 kWh of electricity, and diverted over 1.1 million pounds of waste from landfills.

Community input is being accepted as part of the City’s budget process. Chamber members who wish to learn more or provide feedback are encouraged to participate in the City’s public comment process or contact City Council directly.

Call to action: Please consider sending a letter, email, or public comment in support of continued funding for the West Hollywood Green Business Program.

Key points to include in your message:

  • Support continuation of the WeHo Green Business Program (even at reduced funding)

  • Highlight cost savings for businesses from energy, water, and waste reduction
  • Emphasize climate and waste diversion impacts

  • Note strong participation and certified businesses already achieved

  • Request preservation of existing program infrastructure and partnerships

  • WeHo GBP supports alignment with West Hollywood’s Climate Action goals

More Human, More Resources - HR for Entrepreneurs

We’re Too Small for HR

When your team is small, there’s a natural rhythm to how things work. You communicate directly. You make decisions fast. You know everyone’s name, their dog’s name, and probably their coffee order. It feels manageable. It feels personal. It feels like you don’t need a system because you are the system.

But here’s what I need you to really sit with: you are not too small for HR. You are already doing HR. Every single day. You’ve just been doing it without a plan.

HR Isn’t a Department. It’s What Happens When You Manage People.
