New program explains basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia

In the United States alone, more than 5 million individuals are living with Alzheimer’s and 16 million are serving as their unpaid caregivers. The disease is a global crisis that impacts numerous families right here in our community. However, no one has to face this disease alone or without information.

The Alzheimer’s Association® has created an education program covering the basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia to provide a general overview for people who are facing a diagnosis as well as those who wish to be informed.

The free Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia program:

  • Explores the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

  • Examines what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s.

  • Details the risk factors for and three general stages of the disease.

  • Identifies FDA-approved treatments available to treat some symptoms.

  • Looks ahead to what’s on the horizon for Alzheimer’s research.

  • Offers helpful Alzheimer’s Association resources

The annual Lord’s Gym Kids Mud Run is FREE, and it’s taking over Oroville on Saturday, June 1, 2019!  The Kids Mud Run is a mile-long, obstacle course-style race for children ages 4-12. Kids will run, jump, swing and crawl through over 20+ exhilarating obstacles--not to mention mud!  The race is divided into three separate age groups (4-6, 7-9 & 10-12) with age-appropriate obstacles so that children can run together their friends and peers of the same age. This allows the race to be safe enough for little ones while also challenging the pre-teens. A special school competition, know as the “Superhero School Bell”, allows children to rack up points for their school by taking part and dressing up in their school’s colors.

In between races kids, will enjoy Mud Fest with inflatables, food and carnival style attractions.  Mud Fest will be running 9am-3pm at an additional cost.

Registration is FREE before May 30th!  So make sure to register today and save your spot for the most exciting Kids Mud Run yet!

Terry Nathan Photography Workshop:
In this two-day photography workshop, we will use Lassen Volcanic National Park’s stunning landscape and diversity of ecosystems to improve our skills making photographs. By combining in-class and hands-on photography experiences in the park, we will learn about compositional principles that will enable us to make more compelling photographs of wildflowers, geologic features, and grand mountain views. The workshop will consist of a two-hour in class presentation on the principles of lighting and composition, a five-hour hands-on field excursion, and a post photo-shoot critique session.

Paddlers mark your calendar for July 27th.   Bring your kayak, canoe or SUP and plan for a wonderful day on the west shore of Lake Almanor with other paddlers.  The poker run consists of 5 shore stops at 3 different locations to pick up numbers to make your poker hand.  Prizes will be awarded to the two best hands of the day.  This is not a race, but a way to have fun on Lake Almanor while taking in the majestic views of Lassen Peak and Dryer Mountain.  If you are lucky you may have the opportunity to watch an eagle or osprey catch a fish out of the lake.  Meet at Plumas Pines Resort at 7 am and before event starts at 8 am.  Choose between an 5 or 8-mile route.

Bring your friends and make a day out of it.  Or stay at a campground along the west shore and make a weekend out of it.  Lunch will be catered by Plumas Pines; the 5-mile loop paddlers will pick up lunches at the finish line next to Plumas Pines.  The 8-mile loop paddlers will get their lunches at the turnaround at Rocky Point Campground, before heading back to the finish line.  Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented from Lake Almanor Kayak Rental or Bodfish Quiet Mountain Sports.

Running with the Bears is Plumas County's brand new Boston Qualifier, and a fundraiser for foster children served by Mountain Circle Family Services. The Bears is a uniquely rural experience; goody bags, for instance, are filled with locally made products and, of course, bear bells! As runners cross the finish line, they’re greeted with an ice cold beer from a local brewery (UnderCoverAleWorks), and a massage with a view of the whole valley (juice, coffee, water and hydration drinks also available of course). It’s also one of few western races in August; higher elevations bring cooler temperatures- In 2011, the race-day low was 46 degrees, so be sure to bring your jacket! This event WILL sell out by early August, so please register early online at www.runningwiththebears.org

Come join us for the 5th Annual Courage Triathlon!  100% of the proceeds from this event go to the non-profit 501 (3) C organization COURAGE WORLDWIDE, who built a home for children right here in California rescued from sex trafficking.
After learning of the staggering lack of services for the victims of human trafficking right here in America, I vowed to do something.  So Joanne Vice and I created the COURAGE TRIATHLON to help bring awareness and funds to partner with COURAGE WORLDWIDE.  Our vision became that of many in the community of both Lassen and Plumas County.
Come run so they do not have to.  August 25, 2018 at the Plumas Pines Resort, Lake Almanor California.  You can participate in teams of three or individually.  It is a 2.8 mile run, 7.1 bike and a 4.1 mile kayak, all along the stunning shores of Lake Almanor.  If you feel that participating is not possible for you, register to volunteer or sponsor a team!  Everyone can DO SOMETHING to end the crime of human trafficking. Register for both at couragerun/triathlon.org or Visit www.courageworldwide.org and our Facebook page: Courage Triathlon, Lake Almanor, Ca for information, registration and to view over 3,000 pictures.
visit some local businesses and say hello to the proud sponsors of the Courage Triathlon,  Plumas Pines Resort, Lake Almanor Ca,  St. Bernard Lodge, Mill Creek Ca, Rusty Chandelier, Chester Ca, Chester Holiday Market, Chester Ca, Susanville IGA, Susanville Ca, Susan River Fire Department, Susanville Ca, California Corrections Supervisor Organization, Plumas Bank in Susanville, Ca, FWA Fire Water Supply, Redding Ca, High Sierra Fire, Janesville, Ca and Chester Plumas Bank.
We look forward to seeing you there.  Together we can end human trafficking! Come RUN SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO!
