Family reading is a wonderful way to help your children develop a love of reading and improve their reading comprehensions over the summer! With this program, sponsored by Dollar General Literacy Foundation, Black Hills Energy, Peoples Credit Union, and Kwik Star, you can help your child ge a head start on their reading comprehension! 

Come to the Library to pick up a Family Reading Log, cross our rockets for every 10 minutes you read together, and return your completed logs to the Library by August 30th for a chance to win a 1-year Family Membership to The Science Center of Iowa OR a $100 gift card to Fort Frenzy, and other fun prizes including $20 Pizza Hut gift cards!

Learn to use a torch to melt and shape colorful glass into beads. All equipment and supplies are provided; no previous experience is needed. You will go home with a handful of beautiful beads and a new appreciation of an artform that is over 1000 years old! Rhonda will teach you how to set up an efficient workstation, explain the supplies and equipment used, some basic design elements and how to shape the glass, all while maintaining a safe environment.

Join in the fun in Webster City at the annual Doodlebug Reunion. Enjoy creating the first ever, “Doodlebug Quilt” in a fun, relaxing environment in the conference room at the AmericInn.

 

Choose to piece your design or to use a preprinted Doodlebug panel for your quilt. Sharon will give you step by step instructions. The 12” quilt block combines traditional piecing and paper piecing to create this one-of-a-kind Doodlebug Hiawatha replica, suitable for framing or for a pillow top.

 

The Doodlebug pattern is available for sale, but free to all who take the workshop. It will make a great gift!

Carmon Slater comes to us from Colorado and has spent a lifetime finding creative and artistic ways to engage kids with nature. Carmon Slater has been working with fiber in various ways, including quilting, throughout his career. He has a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Iowa and has always combined his love of science with his love of art. He has shown his work throughout the country and is a past craftsman trustee of the American Craft Association, past president of Colorado Artist Association Artist/Craftsmen and Iowa Designer Crafts Association.

Spend two days over a week-end and enjoy all the forest has to offer. Experiment with various art making activities like solar nature prints, fish prints, clay and paint. Savor and Interpret the experience with creative visual journaling exercises. Share dinner and campfire in the evening. Bring musical instruments, share poems and stories and perhaps even share some of the writings done during the workshop. We may have a popup art show of all our creations at the end of the weekend!

Enjoy the fall foliage in beautiful Briggs Woods Park and experiment with various watercolor techniques to record that beauty in a personal keepsake painting. Work with an engaging, talented artist in a relaxed and casual setting to learn several simple techniques such as frisket, salt, and alcohol that will allow you to express yourself in this medium. You can observe the varied shapes and patterns of the trees native to the park and interpret them in your work. Please bring images or copies of photographs from your personal collections to works with and any watercolors or papers you have. There will also be supplies available for you to use so don’t worry if you have not had any experience with this medium. All levels are welcome.
