Salute to Veterans at the Adams County Historical Society's McGowan House

ADAMS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PRESENT
“SALUTE TO VETERANS”

We celebrate American Independence Day on the Fourth of July every year. We think of July 4, 1776, as a day that represents the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.  We also honor our veterans from all wars.

During the month of July, a special display will be presented at the McGowan House, 507 Main Street in Friendship to remember and honor veterans of all wars from the 1898 Spanish-American War through present day wars.  The McGowan House will be open each Saturday in July from 1 to 4 PM.  The “Salute To Veterans” display will commence on July 6 with patriotic music and refreshments in addition to a number of displays of uniforms and artifacts.

Hear the stories of some of our Adams County soldiers such as Edward R. Schwartz who served in WWI, last assigned to the 47th Coast Artillery; Ned McGowan, son of Dr. W. E. McGowan, who joined in the Spanish-American War at age 16.  See the uniforms and medals of Edward Thomsen who served in both WWII and the Korean War.

View the story in words and pictures “Two Fathers, One War” written by Marcia L. Pollock Wysocky about soldiers Clarence H. Mathe and Melvin L. Pollock.

On display will be the uniform of Lt. Joann G. Bingen Gruendler, RN who served in WWII in the European Theatre.  (Joann was the mother of Mary Jo Meyer of Friendship.) A complete record of Joann’s time in the military along with other interesting items of hers will be on display.

Artifacts of many wars will be open to viewing such as the Veteran records and pension book of a dozen soldiers from wars beginning with the Spanish-American War; items from Viet Nam, Iraq and India will be displayed.  Posters from WWII and a Global Atlas of the World At War will help you follow the progress of WWII from start to finish.

We hope you will join us one or more Saturdays in July to remember and give a “Salute to Veterans.”
