Storytime Train

Nevada Southern Railroad

 

Bring the kids (regardless of age) and have a fun time riding the train, coloring, doing a craft, and listening to a children's story.  Purchase regular tickets to ride the train and join our Storytime Crew in the dining car of the train, on the regularly scheduled train runs (10AM, 11:30AM, 1PM, or 2:30PM).  We furnish the coloring pages and markers, craft materials, and the story.  Sit with your kids, have fun, take photos or videos, and watch the beautiful desert scenery from the comfort of our train. 

Also joining us this Special weekend while the Author of Aggie's Purple Hands, Rhonda Gaitlin who will be signing her books; they will also be available for purchase.

National Public Lands Day

The recreation area is hosting a litter cleanup day and volunteers are needed to clean an area of the park that was heavily used during the summer.  Participants will receive a voucher to visit any federal public land for free at a later date.  For details or to register, contact 702/293-8711 or Lake_Volunteer_Coordinator@nps.gov.

School Violence Panel Discussion
Government, law enforcement, mental health, and school security stakeholders will examine previolence indicators, implementing ‘see something, say something’ policies, issues surrounding how reported behaviors are escalated, resources available to connect at-risk individuals, identifying best practices and the need for schools to have a collaborative approach to assess threats. Attendees will be provided with a list of free resources.

Tabletop Exercise: After-Hours School Violence Incident
Attendees will collaborate in a tabletop exercise that walks participants through an After-Hours School Violence scenario. In this small-group program, participants will be assigned specific roles (e.g. spokesperson, scribe, stakeholder). Once the rules are explained and the emergency scenario is introduced, there will be facilitated and timed discussions with Q&A time. Each team will then share specific responses as the scenario unfolds.

BBSC Las Vegas Triathion

Around 700 triathletes will run, bike and swim through Lake Mead National Recreation Area during the BBSC Las Vegas Triathlon. The race has many distance options available, including individual and relay. The swim portion of the race takes place at Boulder Beach. Then, athletes will bike along Lakeshore Road and Northshore Road, turn around points for each distance will  be marked. Drivers should use caution when passing cyclists. Cyclists are reminded that they must bike in single file on the roadways. Cycling abreast is not permitted within Lake Mead NRA. Art Guild Featured Artist Exhibit

JOURNEYS ~ a Mixed Media exhibit by Linda Shaffer
Linda Shaffer is the featured artist for the month of September at the Boulder City Art Guild Gallery. 


Linda is an award winning Southern Nevada artist. She works in a variety of mediums: acrylic paint , mixed media , watercolor, calligraphy, jewelry and print making.  This show features print making and jewelry inspired by nature and the journey of travels.  The sea, sand, seasons and galaxy pendants, will be on exhibit.  She is a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America’s Graduate Jeweler program and a founding member of the Fabulous Las Vegas Scribes Calligraphy Society.

A special message will be presented by retired Captain Jeffrey Brookman, who served in Desert Storm and Somalia, and his wife, chaplain Monterey Brookman.  Also participating in the service will be members of the Southern Nevada patriot Guard.
