Tibbits Entertainment Series presents Celestina Y Los Sanchez Concertith Memorial Concert

This event is by donation. Doors will open and seating for this event will begin 30 minutes prior to showtime.

This dynamic music performance celebrates both Hispanic Heritage month and the Cultivating Community programming. Well known throughout the Battle Creek and West Michigan region, Celestina y Los Sanchez performs Tejano Conjunto. The style refers to a small musical ensemble performing Tex-Mex music which fuses Mexican and US influences including country music, polka and waltzes.

Born and raised near Battle Creek, Celestina has been singing and performing since the age of 6 and by age 12 officially joined her uncles in the group headed by her grandfather, Lupe Sanchez.  Sanchez’s career began in the 1960s and by the 1970s he was performing most every weekend in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Ohio and Indiana.

In 2015 Celestina competed in the Tejano Idol competition in Austin, Texas where she was second runner-up and the only contestant not from the state of Texas. As a group Celestina y Los Sanchez has been recognized on multiple Tejano Conjunto Countdowns across the US and South America and their latest album is available on Spotify and Apple Music.

According to the Smithsonian Institute Tejano Conjunto or Tex-Mex Conjunto has been around for more than 100 years and is “one of the most enduring musical traditions among Mexicans and Mexican Americans.” One of the most celebrated entertainers Selena is credited with catapulting Tejano music to mainstream radio stations across the US and Mexico in the 1980s and 90s.

Emcee for the afternoon will be Daniel (Dano) Oropeza, a well-known advocate and radio host in West Michigan. With a long list of organizations which he has founded or assisted through organizing fundraisers or promoted through his broadcasts, he has made a significant impact on his community. He is co-founder of Despierta Kalamazoo Committee, co-host of Alma Latina for WMUK 102.1 FM, and DJ at Mi Gente Radio (MI Cumbia +) FB live365.

In addition to the concert, there will be a display of the flags of Central and South America.

TIBBITS ENTERTAINMENT SERIES PRESENTS A POW WOW EXHIBITION

Tickets for this event are $10. Doors will open and seating for this event will begin 30 minutes prior to showtime.

Please join us in learning and experiencing the Native American culture through a narrated Pow Wow exhibition. The drum group will present a Great Lakes Northern style of singing. They are Potawatomi Anishinaabe, formally one of the Three Fires people. The of nations of the Three Fires are Potawatomi, Ojibway, and Ottawa. The event will include invited dancers and singers, along with artwork, Native American made crafts, and apparel vendors.

The exhibition is a formal celebration of the Native American culture with revitalization of singing, dancing and storytelling of the ancestors. The Drum is the heartbeat of Mother Earth. The ancestors of the Native Americans danced for hunting, for battle, for love. They danced for the spirit of all living things. The indigenous people honor their ancestors in a celebration through Pow Wows. It is a time for happiness and healing. It is a time for family. Pow Wows are honored through the songs and dance styles and a show of respect of others. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted.

There were policies to ban native American culture and lifeways. The Indian Removal Act signed by President Andrew Jackson in 1830 forced Native Americans from their homelands to reservations west of the Mississippi River. It started the assimilation of Native Americans, removing children to industrial boarding schools, and stripping from them their culture and language. Colonized and forced to read and write English, they lost their heritage, language and the celebrations of their ancestors. Pow Wows were illegal. It wasn’t until 1978 that the American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978 (AIRFA) protected the rights of Native Americans to exercise their traditional religions, ensuring access to sites, use and possession of sacred objects, and the freedom to worship through ceremonials and traditional rites.

Pow Wows are always an honor to have a way to revitalize the celebration of Native American culture. Come learn and celebrate the meaning behind the different dances, the prayers they represent, hear the singing of beautiful songs and what they represent. All are welcome to join in healing of the nation.

The original name in the Potawatomi language is Bode’wadmi translate Firekeepers. The language is Bode wad mi mowen (if sounded out correctly). Potawatomi is an English version of the actual name.

Cultural Influences of Dance Lecture
COLDWATER – Tibbits and Young Michigan Dances are teaming up with professional actor/dancer Beau Hutchings to present “Cultural Influences of Dance” on Wednesday October 12 at Tibbits Opera House for a dynamic lecture presentation explaining the origins of common dance moves and popular dance trends.

In this exciting presentation, Hutchings will dissect some widely known dance steps performed anywhere from a wedding line dance to a current "TikTok Trend,” and explain the cultural origin from which they derive. The art form of dance has rich multicultural roots and this discussion will be sure to have audience members tapping in their seat, aisle or on stage!

A native of Marshall, Michigan, Hutchings has a history with both Tibbits Summer Theatre and Young Michigan Dances (YMD).  Having danced in numerous YMD productions as a young dancer since 2003, he now acts as a guest artist and occasional choreographer for YMD Spring productions performed at the Marshall Franke Center for the Arts.

Hutchings studied Music Theatre Performance at Western Michigan University, and promptly moved to New York City where he worked as a professional Dancer/Singer/Actor for 12 years. Notable credits include playing Riff in the US National and European International tours of "West Side Story" (dancing original choreography by Jerome Robbins); ensemble and principal understudy in Royal Caribbean's Broadway on the Seas Production of "Chicago" (dancing original Bob Fosse choreography); and dancer for "Broadway Bares" a summer fundraiser presented by Broadway Cares: Equity Fights Aids at New York City's famous Hammerstein Ballroom in 2019 (created and produced by Tony Award Winning Director and Choreographer Jerry Mitchell). Hutchings currently resides in Marshall, where he works full time with Starr Commonwealth based in Albion. In his spare time, he keeps busy and involved in the arts by choreographing musicals for the Franke Center Youth Theatre program. He also sits as a judge for the Applause Talent National Dance Competition Circuit, and for Impact Dance Adjudicators (IDA) based out of New York City.

As Coldwater’s own dance company, YMD is proud to include this presentation in the Cultivating Community schedule as it celebrates its 50 years of bringing the finest in dance to youth in this region. Since it was founded by Stanley Godfrey in 1972 with its first presentation of “Nutcracker,” YMD has reached more than 30,000 youth through its school programs and public performances. It has presented classic ballets such as Coppelia,” “Peter and the Wolf,” and “The Sleeping Beauty” prologue as well as original theatrical dance productions like “The Snow Girl,” “Legends of the Great North Woods,” “Goldilocks,” “The Emperor and the Nightingale,” “Wonder Tales from Around the World,” “The Dancing Princess,” “The Wood Maiden,” and “Tales from Mount Olympus.” These new productions in collaboration with playwrights Charles Burr and the late Bobb James, combine live dance and theatre to bring new dimensions of storytelling to the stage.

This lecture is one of more than two dozen cultural events taking place throughout Branch County and hosted by groups including Branch Intermediate School District, Branch District Library, Hope Café, AIRA, KCC Grahl Center, and Branch Pride to name just a few.

“Cultural Influences of Dance” is free to the public with donations accepted at the door. As part of the Cultivating Community celebration, it is partially funded by Michigan Council for Arts and Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Women Who Care.

The lecture presentation is held at the beautiful historic Tibbits Opera House, 14 S. Hanchett Street, in Coldwater. It begins at 7pm with doors to the theatre, Ghost Light Bar, and Art Gallery open at 6:30pm. For more information, call or visit Tibbits.org.
