Burning Bright, a group of Decorah-area professional and amateur musicians, offer their annual benefit concerts. Kathy Reed and Otter Dreaming co-direct the event. Along with the adult choir, the concert will feature children and youth choirs, other small vocal ensembles, and various instruments, both as accompaniment and as stand-alone groups, including fiddle, guitar, recorder, banjo, piano, bodhrán, and other percussion.

Each year the musicians donate concert proceeds to various nonprofit organizations. This year's beneficiaries include the Farmers' Market Coupon Program for clients of the Decorah Community Food PantryNeighbors Helping Neighbors, a local effort to assist immigrants and their families; Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center's Immigration Working Group, which provides legal consultation for immigrants; Re-Member, which works with the Oglala Lakota Nation on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, to improve the quality of reservation life; and New Hope Jeremiah Project, which focuses on programs for children and feeds hundreds of members of its Cape Town, South Africa, community.

Tickets for both performances are now on sale at the Oneota Community Co-op (415 W. Water St.). Tickets, if available, may also be purchased at the door; but advance purchase is recommended since performances are often sold out.

History Book Group

The History Book Group will discuss Barbara Tuchman’s “The Distant Mirror” at 6:30 p.m. Thurs. Dec. 20th on the 2nd floor of the library. The fourteenth century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering age of crusades, cathedrals, and chivalry; on the other, a world plunged into chaos and spiritual agony. Barbara Tuchman examines not only the rhythms of history but the texture of domestic life in this time: what childhood was like, what marriage meant, and how money, taxes, and war dominated the lives of serf, noble, and clergy alike.

Friday Book Group

The Friday Book Group will meet at 2:00 p.m. Fri. Dec. 21st on the 2nd floor of the library to discuss Faith Sullivan’s “What a Woman Must Do.” When Celia Canby—Kate’s niece, Bess’s mother, and Harriet’s cousin—is killed in a car accident, it’s up to Kate and Harriet to raise Bess. Ten years later, on the day of the accident, the local newspaper in Harvester, MN, dredges up the story of the accident for a careless “Way Back When” piece, subjecting the women to another round of grief. Headstrong and closed off, Bess yearns to escape Harvester before she “goes bad.” But when she begins to trace the same path of mistakes her mother made—a risky relationship with a local married man—everything seems on the verge of falling apart.
