Benjamin Percy @ Dragonfly Books: SUICIDE WOODS: STORIES

Dragonfly Books welcomes returning Minnesota author Benjamin Percy for an author event featuring his new collection of short stories, Suicide Woods: Stories (Graywolf Press, 2019) on Thursday, November 7th, 7:00 PM at Dragonfly Books.

A potent brew of horror, crime, and weird happenings in the woods, Suicide Woods is Benjamin Percy’s first story collection since his acclaimed Refresh, Refresh. Percy, whose recent work includes the werewolf novel Red Moon, the post-apocalyptic Lewis-and-Clark saga The Dead Lands, the paranormal/internet thriller The Dark Net, and the Green Arrow, Teen Titans, and James Bond comic book series, now brings his page-turning skills to these new stories, which have appeared everywhere from Esquire, VQR, and Ploughshares to McSweeney’s, Orion, the Missouri Review, and more.

In story after story, Percy delivers haunting and chilling narratives that will have readers hanging on every word. A boy in his uncle’s care falls through the ice on a pond and emerges in a frozen, uncanny state. A group of people in therapy for suicidal ideation undergoes a drastic session in the woods with fatal consequences. A body found on a train and a blood-soaked carpet in an empty house are clues to a puzzling crime in a small town. And in a pulse-quickening novella, thrill seekers on a mapping expedition into the “Bermuda Triangle” of remote Alaska are stranded on a sinister island that seems to want them dead. A master class in suspense and horror, Suicide Woods is a dark, inventive collection packed to the gills with eerie, can’t-miss tales.

Benjamin Percy is the author of four novels, two books of short stories, and the essay collection Thrill Me. His honors include a fellowship from the NEA, the Whiting Writers’ Award, two Pushcart Prizes, and the Plimpton Prize. He lives in Minnesota.

Drift Less. Give More.

Northeast Iowa shoppers could save big this holiday season when they "drift less and give more," in Decorah. The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce and participating merchants want you to know that beginning on November 18th, when you drop off a suggested Northeast Iowa Food Bank donation of $5 or five items at the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce building, (507 W. Water St., Decorah), you'll receive a voucher for 5% off at participating merchants. All who give can donate up to $20 or twenty items, thereby making it possible to collect up to 20% off in vouchers that can be used either individually or in combined increments, based on the specifications of each merchant.

Holiday shoppers can determine which stores are participating in "Drift Less. Give More." by the signs in their windows outlining their participation and what discount(s) they are offering in exchange for 5% off vouchers, which will be good through December 31, 2019.

Dragonfly Books Presents: Allen Eskens @ The Lingonberry

Dragonfly Books welcomes returning Minnesota author Allen Eskens for an author event featuring his new novel, Nothing More Dangerous (Mulholland Books, 2019) on Tuesday, November 19th, 7:00 PM at The Lingonberry Event Venue, 218 W. Water St., Decorah.

"This powerful, unforgettable crime novel is a coming-of-age book to rival some of the best, such as William Kent Krueger's Ordinary Grace or Larry Watson's Montana 1948. While Eskens’s books are not part of a series, his readers will recognize Boady as an adult character in two of his earlier books, including the award-winning The Life We Bury. This timely stand-alone is a must-read for followers of the best in crime fiction.” — Library Journal starred review

In a small Southern town where loyalty to family and to "your people" carries the weight of a sacred oath, defying those unspoken rules can be a deadly proposition. After fifteen years of growing up in the Ozark hills with his widowed mother, high-school freshman Boady Sanden is beyond ready to move on. He dreams of glass towers and cityscapes, driven by his desire to be anywhere other than Jessup, Missouri. Then Thomas Elgin moves in across the road, and Boady's life begins to twist and turn. Coming to know the Elgins—a black family settling into a community where notions of "us" and "them" carry the weight of history—forces Boady to rethink his understanding of the world he's taken for granted. As secrets hidden in plain sight begin to unfold, Boady begins to see the stark lines of race and class that both bind and divide this small town - and he will be forced to choose sides.Allen Eskens is the USA Today-bestselling author of The Life We Bury, The Guise of Another and The Heavens May Fall. His debut novel, The Life We Bury, has been a local book club favorite, has been published in 16 languages and is being developed for a feature film. He now lives with his wife, Joely, in out-state Minnesota where he has been a practicing criminal defense attorney for 25 years.

The Center Stages Series brings Nobuntu to the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther College campus. Nobuntu is a remarkable and lively a capella quintet from Zimbabwe. This all female group relies on their rich voices, authentic dance and minimal use of traditional Zimbabwean instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano). Nobuntu has drawn international acclaim for their inventive performances that celebrate Afro jazz, gospel and traditional Zimbabwean songs.
