Ute Pass Chamber Players Founders' Concerto Fest

The Ute Pass Chamber Players, your hometown chamber music ensemble, presents this extraordinary event as a gift to Teller County and other areas of the Pikes Peak Region.  UPCP programs for each season are usually built around the special pieces amazing guest musicians want to play.  For this concert, the Founders invited 26 musician friends to help perform three favorite pieces, all of them concerti.

What is a concerto, anyway?  It’s a composition for a solo player and an orchestra teamed in a friendly rivalry.  Guy Dutra-Silveira has chosen an Oboe Concerto by Johann Christian Fischer (1733-1800).  Clark Wilson will perform the one-and-only Concerto that Mozart (1756-1791) wrote for Bassoon, and Barb Riley-Cunningham chose one of the five that Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote for piano, his fiery Third Piano Concerto.  These are all pieces from  the Classical period but the syles are distinctly different.  Don't miss this unique and exciting performance!

Teddy Roosevelt & Preserving National Treasures

Theodore Roosevelt is often referred to as the “conservation president” for his efforts to save our national treasures. Roosevelt, portrayed by Don Moon of Colorado Springs, will appear at the Gold Coin Club Saturday, Feb. 17 as a fundraiser for Victor Lowell Thomas Museum. He will provide insight into his work preserving our national treasures via the Antiquities Act of 1906.

The event includes a “bully” reception at noon.

Roosevelt visited Victor as a vice presidential candidate in September of 1900.  The Rough Rider was run out of town by an angry mob but returned later to accept apologies and to speak at Victor’s Gold Coin Club.

In August of 1901, Roosevelt rode the Short Line Railroad over the scenic route to Colorado Springs which is now known as Gold Camp Road. At one point near Rosemont, where travelers could see all the way to Kansas, he exclaimed: “This is the ride that bankrupts the English language.”

After becoming president in 1901, Roosevelt used his authority to protect wildlife and public lands by creating the United States Forest Service (USFS) and establishing 150 national forests, 51 federal bird reserves, four national game preserves, five national parks, and 18 national monuments. During his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt protected approximately 230 million acres of public land.

The Antiquities Act of 1906 was considered a necessity after two decades of looting, desecration, and destruction of Native American sites in the Southwest such as Chaco Canyon and Cliff Palace. The bill was the result of several years’ work by, among others, Representative John F. Lacey and Senator Jonathan P. Dolliver of Iowa (the latter a friend of Theodore Roosevelt) and Representative John F. Shafroth and Senator Thomas M. Patterson of Colorado. On June 8, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the bill.

The Act for the Preservation of Antiquities (also called the Lacey Act) was an intentionally broad piece of legislation to set aside "historic landmarks, historic and prehistoric structures, and other objects of historic or scientific interest" in order to stop their destruction. As it was worded, either the President or Congress could establish national monuments under the Antiquities Act. Roosevelt quickly took advantage of the authority given him and the wide variety of sites allowed by the bill. He began on September 24, 1906, by proclaiming Devils Tower in Wyoming the first national monument under the Antiquities Act.

The 1906 Act was replaced by a stronger measure, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, which gave greater power to authorities to protect rare or unique land formations, archeological sites, historic locations, and other such monuments.

The event will also include a display and information about the local historic preservation efforts, including Newmont Mining Corporation’s restoration of the Independence Mine headframe. The headframe is on the National Register of Historic Places, a program of the National Park Service.

Midland Railroad Tragedies

Midland Tragedies

The Colorado Midland Railway was the first standard gauge line into the Colorado Rockies.  At its peak it was 261 miles long and had two branches.  The route began in Colorado City, went on to Leadville and then crossing through the Continental Divide via the Hagerman Tunnel it continued on to Basalt and terminated at New Castle, Colorado.

The first contract for construction was awarded on April 6, 1886.  The construction in Colorado Springs started in July of 1886 with 3000 men spread between Colorado City and Buena Vista.  Eight months later, the track was completed to Woodland Park and made it to Florissant on March 23, 1887.  In Lake George, the tracks through the 11 Mile Canyon weren’t completed until about June and then continued on to Buena Vista, reaching that point in July. Eleven Mile Canyon was the deadliest stretch of the Midland in El Paso, Park and Teller Counties. “Midland Tragedies” will address some of those many accidents in our area.

Steve Plutt, local historian, will present an interesting program on this piece of Teller County history at the Pikes Peak Historical Society’s February Chautauqua. Steve has long lived in the shadow of Pikes Peak, having grown up in the Woodland Park area. Steve now resides near Lake George.

The Pikes Peak Historical Society invites you to learn more about the Midland Railroad and the tragedies which befell the line at the PPHS monthly Chautauqua on Sunday, February 18th at 2pm at the Florissant Library. The Library is located adjacent to the Florissant Community Park on 334 Circle Drive in Florissant. This program is presented as a public service of the Pikes Peak Historical Society in partnership with the Rampart Range Library System.
