Ajax Mine Tour 2018

The Ajax Mine sits high above Victor on historic Battle Mountain. The Battle Mountain Trail across the lower part of Victor’s backdrop beneath the Ajax has been a popular hike since 2000 when it was installed.

Last year the trail was been extended to a new overlook at the Ajax Mine. Newmont Mining Corporation invested in the construction required to provide visitors with a safe access to the mine site and overlook above Victor. The overlook has now been closed to ensure safety at the mine site during the expansion of the mining operation. This temporary closure will be for about one year and means that no access will be allowed other than during a special tour Saturday, May 19.

The tour will include an historical overview of the mine history by Victorite Gary Horton, who worked at the Ajax during its final years in production. This tour is subject to safety considerations and may include alternate stops at the Independence and Portland mines.

The tour is $15 per person and is limited to the first 60 tickets sold. Tickets may be purchased at VictorColorado.com by credit card or by cash the door the day of the event. The tour will start at the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum at 12:30 p.m. when shuttles will take tour-goers to the Ajax Mine site and overlook. After the history presentation, a shuttle will take everyone back to the museum in Victor.

Cosponsors of this event are The Southern Teller County Focus Group (STCFG) which will receive all proceeds from the event for historic preservation projects, Newmont Mining Corporation, and Cripple Creek Parks and Recreation.

Traveling Medicine Shows

Traveling Medicine Shows
The days of the old time traveling medicine shows seem a distant memory. Join us at the Pikes Peak Historical Society May Chautauqua for a glimpse into some of the history surrounding this era of American merchandising and entertainment. Find out more about “snake oil” and intriguing patent remedies, all touting to “cure what ails you.” Surprisingly, some are still on the market today! Kathy Herrin will present an interesting program, including some fascinating photos, about Traveling Medicine Shows.

Kathy Herrin has spent more than two decades in the Criminal Justice field. She took a break, of almost two years, to serve as the Director of Academic Services at the Fremont Campus of Pueblo Community College. She returned to the Probation Department in March 2017. Past probation work included two years as the Victim Services Officer in Pueblo and about two years supervising offenders. Prior to her Probation career, Herrin was with the Cañon City Police Department, where some of her duties included Field Training for new officers, Crisis Negotiation and Crime Prevention and Victim Assistance.

The Pikes Peak Historical Society invites you to learn more about the Old Time Traveling Medicine Shows at the PPHS monthly Chautauqua on Sunday, May 20th at 2pm at the Florissant Library. The Library is located adjacent to the Florissant Community Park on 334 Circle Drive in Florissant. This program is presented as a public service of the Pikes Peak Historical Society in partnership with the Rampart Range Library System. Admission is free and refreshments are served.  No reservation is required but arrive early, seating is limited. For more information call 719-748-8259 or 719-748-3861.

Social Media Essentials: How to Amplify Your ROI

Effective marketers know that social proof is a key ingredient in today’s modern marketing tactics.  Social Media is a tool that dramatically influences buying decisions.  78% of the buyers in both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) markets use social media to make their decisions whether they are ultimately purchasing online or offline.

Are you giving your organization the social proof and visibility it deserves by making consistent choices and then taking the needed action with the social media piece of your marketing mix?

In this workshop learn exactly what social proof is and discover the ways you can leverage the social media marketing efforts for your business.

Your Instructor, Cheri Ruskus will discuss the top social media platforms and decide which ones will provide the social proof you'll need to establish a know, like and trust-factor with past, current and potential customers.

Learning Objectives

  • Discover where you actually currently sit with our online assessment.
  • Prevent the urge to just “dabble” in social media with no results. Make it a tool to actually grow your business.
  • Determine which social media platforms will give you the highest ROI based on where your target audience is currently hanging out.
  • Understand the key ingredient content and what your target audience is hungry to discover.
