CANCELLED - The Woods Empire - From Riches to Rags - CANCELLED

In 1892 the area now known as Victor, Colorado was a fledgling gold prospector’s dream. Winfield Scott Stratton had barely claimed the Independence Mine the summer before and word was out that there was gold on the back side of Pikes Peak.

Warren, Harry and Frank Woods made their way to Victor that year, founded the town, and began what was to be a large but short-lived enterprise. Their business interests, though long since sold to other ventures, still make up a large part of downtown Victor.

A walking tour on Saturday, May 16 will focus on the developments that the Woods brought to the small mining town on the south side of Battle Mountain. The tour begins at the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum with a presentation at 9:30. Guide Gary Horton will lead the group through the main streets and highlight the Woods’ former business interests such as the Victor Hotel and Gold Coin Mine; the events includes a tour of the Gold Coin Club, built by the Woods as a recreation hall for the miners.

CANCELLED - CC&V Mine Tours - CANCELLED

Tour a Real Gold Mine from the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum

Tours of the Newmont Cripple Creek & Victor gold mine will be offered again this summer from the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum. Online reservations for the tours are open for 2020. Operating on daily basis except Thursdays, the tours offer a look at the large-scale surface mining operations between Victor and Cripple Creek. All of the tour proceeds are donated to the museum for its building improvements and operations.

Tours will provide the chance to see giant haul trucks, shovels and drill rigs in action and learn about the reclamation and modern refining methods. Tour guides share historical information on  underground mining as well during the two-hour tour. This year’s tour includes a stop and overlook from the original American Eagles Mine site high above the district.

Check VictorMuseum.com for tour times and dates. The cost is $11 per person plus a small online booking fee - an affordable way for the entire family to see a real working gold mine. Only children 5 years of age and older are allowed on the tours. Please be sure to reserve your preferred tour dates (June is the slowest and the best time to make a reservation) as they are very popular and fill up quickly.
