On Wednesday April 16th, The S.S. Sicamous will be helping the S.S. Okanagan celebrate it's 118th Birthday!

The Stern Saloon, all that is left of the ship, will be open to the general public from 10am to 3pm so come by to check out a piece of Okanagan history...

The S.S. Okanagan was launched on April 16th, 1907 and "floated out on the bosom of Okanagan Lake as graceful as a swan".
At the time, the ship cost $90,000, which would cost $3.1 million in 2025.

The S.S. Okanagan provided daily passenger service with stops in Kelowna, Peachland, Summerland and Penticton for 27 years, from 1907 to 1934.
The trip would "only" take 3 hour and 15 minutes at the rate of "21 miles per hour".

The Ship's colourful history included a murder onboard, a visit by the Governor General of Canada and was retired after the building of the S.S. Sicamous in 1934.

All visitors are welcome!

Steering Through History Lecture Series
George Estabrook, the SS Sicamous First Captain

Thursday, April 17th, 2025 4:00pm

(1099 Lakeshore Dr. W)
Presented By: Robert Nield

Along with fellow members of the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society, Robert is a member of a team that, for the first time, conducted a genealogical study of the lives and experiences of the five men who, over the years, captained of the SS Sicamous. His talk will focus on the first of them - George Ludlow Estabrook. Although possessing tremendous experience and enjoying a position of great seniority within the Canadian Pacific organisation, Estabrook was only Captain for a very short time - as the talk will explain. Drawing on old photographs, census records, and many other sources, Robert will piece together the life of this pioneer mariner, both before he joined the CPR and after he retired from the service.

Robert Nield qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the UK and moved to Hong Kong in 1980. He spent most of his working life there as a partner in one of the world’s largest accountancy practices. Since retirement, Robert has been involved in many not-for-profit organizations. His interests include history (he gained an MPhil degree in 2018), sailing, writing songs, and playing the guitar. Robert came to Penticton with his wife in 2019 and is currently the treasurer for the S.S. Sicamous Marine Heritage Society.
