Face It: Collage for Fabric Portraits

Draw, cut, collage, stitch and sew to create a whimsical portrait, self-portrait, or maybe your alter ego. In this workshop we will walk through basic facial proportions and features, sketch a whimsical portrait, cut pieces from fabric, fuse, then stitch using raw edge appliqué on the sewing machine. The finished piece can wrap a canvas, hang as an art quilt, or become a pillow. The $25 fee will be collected by check, cash, or electronic payment card on 10/2/21.

Basic supply list will be sent upon registration. We’ll break briefly for lunch; please plan to bring a sack lunch or pop out for a snack. Event sponsored by Coles County Arts Council.

Register by September 24, 2021.

Registration requested due to limited seating. You can register by calling 217-581-5114 or register online through this link.

The Sergeant's Daughter: Author Talk

Memoir author, Teressa Shelton, will talk about her decision to write a book dealing with her upbringing in a dysfunctional, military home. Her father was severely punitive, while her mother looked the other way. Family secrets were eventually uncovered and disclosed; friends and trusted adults were few. As the story unfolds, her childhood experiences reveal courage, hope and resilience that allowed her to build a better life. The book took 10 years to write and publish. Teressa will share 5 things she wished someone had told her about writing a memoir. Books will be available for purchase through Bob's Bookstore (706 Jackson Ave, Charleston) and at the event. The net proceeds from the sale of The Sergeant's Daughter will be donated to Habitat for Humanity and the Central Illinois Foodbank.

Register by October 4, 2021.

Ice Cubed: Illinois Snow Sculpting

How did three women from Charleston, Illinois end up participating at the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition in Rockford? Come hear their stories, see the tools they use, and learn how you can form a team and create your own sculpture in snow (not ice) in three and a half days! Or just come and live vicariously.  Jessica Mertz, Shannon Johnson, and Jacqui Worden will share their tales, photos, tools, and secrets as members of Charleston’s own Ice Cubed (Ice to the Power of Three) snow sculpting team in 2018 and 2019 at the Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition sponsored by the Rockford Park District. Jacqui will also talk about being a free agent and forming new teams in 2020 and 2021.

Older, Wiser & Smarter

This series of discussions will focus on our attitudes, beliefs, and values regarding sexuality, much of which is learned from our families of origin. You can attend without any pressure to share. Three separate sessions will address these topics:

* 10/13/21: What's Spirituality Got to Do with It?

Participants will examine messages about sexuality from faith-based traditions, describe how those messages can impact us, and identify how our rights can be based on these beliefs.

* 10/20/21: Exploring Online Relationships

This session helps participants feel more comfortable using the internet to meet people and form relationships, while identifying and limiting possible online dangers. We'll have fun writing a personal ad describing ourselves (or a friend) - bring your imagination!

* 10/27/21: Communication About Sex

We will reflect on communication about sex in our families of origin, considering how it has affected our ability to talk about it today. We'll discuss feelings about slang words, and the importance of communicating openly with a partner.

Eastern Bluebirds

Members of the East Central Illinois Bluebird Society will meet us at Mill Creek Lake at the Lion's Shelter (near boat ramps) for an educational talk on Eastern Bluebirds. Donna Smith, who monitors the bluebird trail at Mill Creek, will give a presentation on the what, when, where and why, with something 'extra' on bluebirds. They are native to North America and are highly valued for their insect control skills. Enjoy a day in the park and you may leave wanting to start your own bluebird trail. Kerry Allen will provide information on the Bluebird Society and resources for additional information will also be shared. Bring a sack lunch and drink to enjoy after the session.

(Parking available close to Lion's Club Shelter. After entering the park and passing the gatehouse, take the first left, then stay to the right. The shelter is on the right hand side.)
