Free Film Friday

The library will show a free film on Friday, September 13, 2019

FPL will show a live-action animated comedy film about a fictional bear character--the movie is based on beloved British children's stories about the bear. This 2017 film is a sequel to one released in 2014. One actor voices the bear character, with other people in live-action roles.

In the film, the bear character is now happily settled with a family and has become a popular member of the local community. The bear decides upon the perfect present for his aunt's 100th birthday--a unique pop-up book of London, which he plans to buy at a certain antique shop. So the bear performs several odd jobs, and saves his wages--but the book is stolen from the shop. The bear gives chase but the culprit escapes . . . then the bear is framed and arrested for a crime he didn't commit.

Monarch Tagging: Jefferson County Conservation

For the past several years high numbers of migrating monarchs have been found at Zillman Hickory Hills. Join us for a fun evening of catching, tagging and releasing monarch butterflies as they begin their annual migration. Monarch butterflies cannot survive our cold Iowa winters, instead they travel up to 3,000 miles south to forests high in the mountains of Mexico. Monarchs will stop to nectar along the way which is to our advantage. Not only do they help to pollinate our plants, but it also gives us the opportunity to see them. We will be assisting with monarch research by catching the butterflies, placing a small tag on their wing, recording their information and releasing them to continue on their long journey. These tags help researchers to learn about the migration of the monarch.

Bison are a keystone species in North American prairies. Through grazing, wallowing, nutrient cycling, and seed dispersal, bison altered their historic range in ways that are not found in most prairie reconstructions. We’ll explore the natural history of bison in the eastern tallgrass prairie and look at new findings from research in Iowa. Pete has been involved in bison ranching in southern Iowa for the last 20 years and is an Assistant Professor of Biology at William Penn University.
