Guitar Legend Phil Keaggy Live in Concert

PHIL KEAGGY
Legendary Guitarist & Singer/Songwriter
Winner of Multiple Dove Awards

Phil Keaggy is perhaps one of the most admired guitarists in music today. His fans range from those who aspire just to be able to play Keaggy’s mistakes, to professional musicians who have been strongly influenced by his style. And in between are those who don’t play guitar, yet find solace in his beautifully penned lyrics and memorable melodies.

Phil’s solo career has spanned more than 40 years, and has included over 60 solo albums, both vocal and instrumental, 8 releases with his band, Glass Harp, as well as numerous duets and trio albums. One of the most sought after studio guitarists, Phil also continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumental compositions.

Born on March 23, 1951 in Youngstown, OH, the ninth of ten children, Phil grew up in a home filled with music. On Phil’s 10th birthday, his brother, Dave returned home with a Sears Silvertone guitar. That’s when the magic began.

Phil spent most of his younger days involved in music, and at the young age of 13, he joined his very first band, the Keytones. He later went on to join such local groups as The Vertices, The Squires, and the Volume Four, who later changed their name to New Hudson Exit.

But it wasn’t until 1970, when Phil’s band Glass Harp (with childhood friend John Sferra on drums, and Dan Pecchio on bass) recorded their self-titled first album that people really began to take notice of this incredibly gifted guitar player. Glass Harp gained more popularity in the Ohio area, opening for such bands as the Kinks and Yes, and even performing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Over the next few years, they recorded two more albums entitled “Synergy” and “It Makes Me Glad”.

By 1972, Phil saw his life going in a different direction, and made the tough decision to leave Glass Harp and pursue a solo career. His first solo album, “What A Day”, was recorded in just a week’s time during January 1973. He married his sweetheart Bernadette that summer, and the following year, they moved to Upstate New York and joined a Church community called Love Inn.

During his years there, Phil took a break from recording his own music. It wasn’t until three years later in 1976 that Phil would record his second solo album, “Love Broke Thru”, which was soon followed by a string of albums, including the acclaimed instrumental album, “The Master And The Musician”.

With the Christian Music industry really beginning to grow, Phil won his very first Dove award in 1988 for his instrumental album, “The Wind and the Wheat. Phil’s second Dove Award came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, “Beyond Nature”. Each year from 1998 to 2001, Phil has dominated the “Instrumental Record” category at the Doves, winning for “Invention”, “Acoustic Sketches”, “Majesty and Wonder”, and most recently “Lights of Madrid”. For three years in a row, Phil was voted one of the top fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers.

These days, Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performing primarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band. He is aware that God gave him a calling to deliver the Gospel through his music, and for over 40 years, Phil Keaggy has been grateful to do just that, and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come.

Soul-Music: Dakota Blonde Live in Concert

Dakota Blonde
Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts

“Soulful, delicate, powerful, insightful… all that and more,” are the words Michael Johnson (International recording artist/song-writer) uses to describe Dakota Blonde.  “Highly addictive & absolutely contagious” is how their loyal & captivated audiences describe them!

Any way you put it, Dakota Blonde, made up of Mary Huckins, Don Pinnella & Tony Raddell have certainly played and sung their way into countless hearts & souls around the globe! They met through their careers in Music Therapy, working with children and adolescents who are emotionally troubled. Therapy… yes… they have a special knack for including audiences in their music and finding the heart strings that music plays in all of us. This special capacity for empathy could explain the titanium bond the band quickly forms with their audiences.

“Wonderful souls on and off the stage!” Performing originals and covers with their unique blend of heart, humor, authenticity and spirit, Dakota Blonde has had overwhelming success with all of their CD releases! … and they just keep ‘em coming! The group has received top honors for their song-writing, CD projects and performances across the country, and even internationally. You certainly won’t want to miss the opportunity to become a Blonde-Head!

The New Christy Minstrels
Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts

(This is NOT a tribute band.)  The New Christy Minstrels® (officially known as The New Christy Minstrels®, Still Under the Direction of Randy Sparks) is an American large-ensemble folk music group founded by Randy Sparks in 1961, and currently in concerts across the country, still going, better than ever with 100% record of at least one standing ovation per concert since Randy Sparks revised the group with the current line up of stellar entertainers!
From their beginnings as prominent figures in the early-1960s U.S. folk revival, the group recorded over 20 albums and had several hits, including Green, Green, Saturday Night, Today, Denver, and This Land Is Your Land. Their 1962 debut album, Presenting The New Christy Minstrels won a Grammy Award and sat in the Billboard charts for two years.  Available at their live concerts are the current CDs:  The Greatest Hits CD, RECYCLED; their most recently recorded CD with this group of performers,  NICE TIME TO BE ALIVE,  and a rare find in the recordings from the Sony Record vaults –  the RAMBLIN’  Extended CD.
The group has launched the musical careers of several musicians, including Kenny Rogers, Gene Clark, Kim Carnes, and Barry McGuire.  No performing group has ever spawned so many successful musical careers as the New Christy Minstrels®.  “For over fifty years we have been the best talent show ever,” says Sparks. ” We still are.”  Don’t miss any opportunity to see this stellar group in concert!  For their history and present accomplishments visit www.thenewchristyminstrels.com

2018 Calhan Christmas Parade of Lights and Music

In 2017 a vision was born out of memories from decades old country Christmas celebrations. A vision that would transport our community and our neighboring friends and communities, to relive our Country Christmas traditions. Family, friends, neighbors all gathering together to celebrate the Christmas holiday season. The excitement builds in preparation to light and decorate our little town for all to enjoy. From the youngest of children to our beloved pioneering families, this is a time when we travel back to when life was simple. At any moment you may see and hear small groups of Christmas Carolers walking through the streets singing and bringing cheer. Our local businesses dress up their storefronts with the beautiful lights and decorations of Christmas. It’s never far away, where you can find a cup of hot chocolate or warm apple cider.  The smells, sights and sounds of Christmas are all around us. It’s almost time for the Christmas Parade of Lights now. Families, Businesses, schools, clubs and groups start gathering together to build their floats. The bands polish their instruments and press their uniforms. The church choirs prepare to warm our hearts with their beautiful voices. The horses, mules and animals are brushed and decked out. The ranchers and farmers light up their vintage tractors and trucks. A multitude of community members and children dress in Country Christmas fashion to proudly walk in the parade handing out candy to all. I can absolutely tell you this. If you want to feel like a kid again, and relive a time your grandparents did, celebrating and enjoying a good old fashioned Country Christmas and one that many thought was long forgotten, you will find it here in Calhan Colorado, proudly with values and tradition every year.
