The Reverend Elijah P. Lovejoy saw the “outright evil” of the slavery system here in St. Louis and grew to be appalled by its’ very existence. After the murder of a Free man of color in 1836 he could no longer hide his rage and spoke of it in his newspaper. The result of these writing, and his uncompromising anti-slavery tone, was that both he and his printing press would meet with utter destruction.

Local St. Louis historian, Julie Nicolai has been studying the Underground Railroad in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas for more than 25 years. Her new book, Enslavement and the Underground Railroad in Missouri and Illinois details the horrors experienced by people enslaved in Missouri, as well as their stories of courage and perseverance, and is available in the park bookstore. The program is free and will take place in the theater in the Visitor Center. No reservations are required.8/17/2023

Laka, pronounced “Lay-ka” has performed professionally since 2016. Her musical influences include Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, James Brown, Etta James, Otis Redding, and Bill Withers. The energetic soul singer performs at a variety of St. Louis venues with an acoustic duo or full band. Commonly referred to as dynamite, many are surprised by the power that her voice projects.
Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a free concert on the lawn in front of the house. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and find a spot on the lawn.

St. Louis was one of the largest cities in the United States during Ulysses S. Grant’s presidency. However, city residents voted to close their boundaries, separate from the rest of St. Louis County, and become an independent city. In this presentation, Historian/Curator Nick Sacco will examine the causes, context, and consequences of the St. Louis City-County split of 1876.

Living history performer Kathryn Harris presents Elizabeth Keckley, formerly enslaved, sewed dresses for wealthy women in St. Louis who loaned her money to purchase her freedom. Within a few years Keckley was employed by President Lincoln’s wife as her seamstress and close confidante. This program is offered in conjunction with the Slavery in St. Louis exhibit. 8/29/2023

Ambassadors are official representatives of the Affton-Lemay Chamber that serve as volunteers on the “front-line” of our meetings & events. Help educate prospective members & guests, welcome new members, and facilitate networking. Committee attends Affton-Lemay Chamber events (meetings, ribbon cuttings, social hours, etc.) and facilitates Key to Chamber Success Seminar.
Mission Statement: The Affton-Lemay Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors promote member commitment through raising awareness of Chamber activities and benefits, promoting member engagement in various activities, and serving as a connection between the chamber and its members.
