This Month: Fact vs Fiction in HBO's Chernobyl

Presented by Chris Perfetti, Assistant Professor, Dept of Nuclear Engineering University of New Mexico.

HBO's recent "Chernobyl" mini-series delves into the history behind the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the most deadly nuclear power accident to ever occur, but how much of the series is accurate and how much is fictionalized?  Dr. Perfetti will discuss the fact VS fiction behind HBO's Chernobyl mini-series in hopes of demystifying the Chernobyl disaster and opening a dialog on nuclear reactor physics in an approachable (and beer-friendly) way.

Thanks to the continued support of UNM, Explora and the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History.

Dr. Peskova will discuss some of the key historical moments that have made Prague such a fascinating city, both culturally and historically. She will also share some fun facts about Prague. For example, did you know that the night lighting of the Prague castle’s exterior was designed and paid for by the Rolling Stones? Did you know that Prague has a pedestrian street so narrow that pedestrian traffic has to be navigated by a stop light on each side?
Prague is a historical jewel that offers a rich architectural heritage with many centuries of historic buildings, bridges, and parks. Not only is it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but it is also the cultural and economic heart of the Czech Republic and, because of its geographic location, of Europe as well.  Prague is famous for the Prague Castle, the largest castle in the world, and the Old Town square with its third-oldest astronomical clock. Prague is also famous for its rich cultural life: Czech composers such as Bedrich Smetana or Antonin Dvorak are known all over the world. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in Prague (where he wrote his Prague Symphony), and the well-known Czech/Jewish writer Franz Kafka was born and raised in Prague. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has developed into a lively magnet for lovers of bohemian life from all over the world.

The Trump administration quietly undertook a range of counterterrorism efforts during its first year, allowing President Trump to rightfully claim at the State of the Union address in January 2018 that, under his administration, ISIS suffered substantial territorial loss to its physical caliphate.  But, that’s not enough.  Christopher Costa will update the terrorism challenge in light of policy choices, a new National Counterterrorism Strategy and international pressure on terrorist actors. Going forward, the US must consider adapting its approach to counter a broader (and sometimes underground) jihadist movement by working with the right foreign partners to institutionalize better governance and support stabilization efforts.  Failure to do so will risk yet another jihadist terrorist group rising to threaten the United States and its broader interests. In addition, senior leaders and policymakers must attain a better understanding of the complex “Grey Zone” dynamics in Syria, where the United States and its partners must be willing to invest in a long-term counter-strategy to contest the competing forces — both state and non-state in that vacuous space.   This dynamic is now complicated by heightened tensions between the United States and Saudi Arabia, as well as the continuance of a strained relationship with Iran.  Lastly, we can’t ignore Homegrown Violent Extremism (HVE) – those would-be terrorists that are at risk of radicalizing and mobilizing for violence.  Effective measures to counter these threats require a range of capabilities —not solely those related to law enforcement, but also with the capabilities of the private sector and civil society.

Christopher P. Costa is the executive director of the International Spy Museum and a 34-year veteran of the Department of Defense. Previously, Mr. Costa served as the Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Counterterrorism on the National Security Council (NSC).  At the NSC, he was responsible for coordinating counterterrorism policy and strategy as well as US hostage recovery activities.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta & Rio Bravo Brewing have teamed up to create the official Balloon Fiesta Brew, Splash & Dash.
The new cans will be available for the first time at the launch party on September 27th at Rio Bravo Brewing Company. The beer will also be available throughout the Balloon Fiesta Park starting October 5th, the official start date of the fiesta.
The name of the Hoppy American Pale Ale stems from a long time balloon fiesta tradition where balloonists head toward the Rio Grande to dip their gondola in the water, and take off again, an activity known as the "Splash & Dash".
The launch party will include beer tastings music and appetizers while supplies last.
6 packs will be available to go.
FREE ENTRY
All ages welcome
