Seven Wednesday evenings, July 12, 26, Aug 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 from 5:30pm-7pm is the Master Conservationist Program at the Extension office. This program is administered through the Natural Resources team within ISU Extension and Outreach – Agriculture and Natural Resources. The project coordinator and county extension offices collaborate to plan offerings of the program, and a local organizing committee is responsible for planning field visits and classroom discussions that are paired with structured online lessons completed before attending.

Winneshiek-Howard County Women, Land & Legacy invites you to join us for an upcoming learning session titled, “Power of the Unseen”, a TEDx talk presented by Dr. Jodi Enos-Berlage on Thursday, August 10th from 5 pm – 7 pm at CUSB Bank located at 111 N Elm St. Cresco, IA. 

Dr. Enos-Berlage is a professor and microbiologist in the Luther College Biology Department where she has researched water quality for over 10 years and leads projects to source antibiotic discovery from Northeast Iowa soils. Jodi grew up on a cow-calf beef and crop farm in Northwest Illinois and currently owns and operates a direct sale beef and hog farm outside of Ridgeway, IA with her family.

In this TEDx talk, “Power of the Unseen”, Dr. Jodi Enos-Berlage interweaves the critical functions of unseen soil microbes, their major soil erosion-driven loss, and the power of unseen women landowners to save them. This presentation will be an extended, live, local, and uncut version with ample opportunity for audience ‘talk-back’ and engagement. Dr. Enos-Berlage will also share new soil health research and community engagement initiatives and invite attendees to share ideas and needs. 

Registration is not required but encouraged. Walk-ins are welcome! Free event and a meal is provided. You and your co-trainer can then plan either the two-day in-person Class Leader training or the virtual 5-day (3 hours per day) Class Leader training.

ISU Farm & Ag Business Management Specialists will present information and updates on farmland leasing topics including current cash rental rates, land values and crop price survey results, determining a fair cash rent, Tenant/Landowner communications and legal aspects, approaches to writing and terminating a farm lease, and share ISU Extension web-based resources. Workshops range from 2-3 hours in length, with a 100-page leasing arrangements book provided, one per registrant. Todd Stephenson, a Certified NRA Instructor with 35 years of firearms experience, will be holding a MINNESOTA AND IOWA Concealed Carry class on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at the Cresco Wildlife Club on the Howard County Fairgrounds in Cresco.  This class is one of the MOST COMPLETE Minnesota and Iowa concealed carry training programs offered.

Check in will begin at 8:30 AM, and class will begin promptly at 9:00 AM.  Class should conclude between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.  You must be 20 years of age or older the day of the class to receive a certificate (certificates may only be redeemed on or after your 21st birthday and are only valid for one year).  Students will be required to qualify using firearms and ammunition provided by the instructor.  Eye and hearing protection will also be provided.  There is NO written test.

The fee for this class is $125.00 – you may bring your driver's license and pre-register in person at Outdoors & More, Inc. in Cresco during normal business hours OR you may show up the day of class to register.   Reservations are suggested as seats are limited.  When your class fee is paid, you will be provided with a one-year Single membership to the Cresco Wildlife Club.  If you are already a member of the Wildlife Club, you will be provided with a one-year single membership extension.  Upgrades to FAMILY memberships are available for an additional $5.00 fee.
