Prescription medications can help us live longer and healthier lives, but any medication has the potential to do harm – especially when misused.  That misuse can include not understanding your medication needs, leaving prescriptions where others can access them, and intentional abuse.

“Generation Rx” seminars will be held this winter and spring in Allamakee, Winneshiek and Howard counties. The seminars, aimed at preventing prescription medication misuse, are presented by volunteers with Northeast Iowa Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (NEI RSVP) and Helping Services for Youth & Families.

According to Deana Hageman, Director of NEI RSVP, “Whether prescription misuse is intentional or not, it’s a problem that needs to be addressed. We hope these presentations will alert people to potential dangers of misusing prescription medications and promote safe medication practices.”

The seminars, which are geared to an adult audience, will provide attendees with information about safe storage of medications, proper disposal of unused medications and tips for taking your medications as prescribed.

Northeast Iowa Generation Rx Seminars scheduled to date:

Monday, February 3, 2:00-3:00 pm at Arlin Falck Assisted Living, Barthell Eastern Star, Decorah

Monday, February 24, 6:00-7:00 pm at Fort Atkinson Community Center, Fort Atkinson

Tuesday, February 25, 6:30-7:30 pm at Decorah Public Library, Decorah

Tuesday, March 10, 11:00-11:45 am at Decorah Senior Center, Decorah

Wednesday, March 18, 9:30-10:30 am at Viking State Bank, Decorah

Drew was SO bummed when his first show at Pulpit Rock had to be canceled. Let's try this again! Come on out for a night of original Americana in one of Drew's favorite towns. More about Drew:

Drew Peterson comes from a long line of musically inept Norwegian Farmers (unless you count Grandpa Pops, the town drunk, who played the harmonica and the concertina for booze). Peterson was not born with musical talent. But once he decided he wanted to become a musician, he tackled this endeavor with hard work and lots of practice, the way he had been taught growing up on a farm in rural Minnesota. Come check out what 20 years of practice sounds like on March 7 at Disgruntled Brewing! More at drewpetersonmusic.com

Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to Barnetimen (Children’s Hour) at Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and heritage center.

“This month, we’ll use patterns on warm Norwegian sweaters and mittens to inspire our own decorations on festive ornaments to take home,” Jennifer Kovarik, Vesterheim Youth Educator, said. “We’ll also enjoy a tasty holiday snack,” she added. Meet in the lobby of the museum’s Main Building.

The program is free, thanks to sponsors David and Brenda Carlson, Greg and Karen Bruening, Amy and Keith Bruening, and Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association.

Con artists target people age 60 and older swindling more than 7 million Americans out of almost $3 billion each year. In an effort to prevent these losses, Northeast Iowa Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (NEI RSVP) and the Iowa Insurance Division will be presenting “Iowa Fraud Fighters” seminars throughout northeast Iowa.

Director of NEI RSVP Deana Hageman says, “We are pleased to present this important fraud-prevention message to people in Northeast Iowa. We hope these presentations will help educate Iowans on common scams and arm them with tools and tips to prevent fraud.”

The seminars teach consumers how to shield their savings from scammers and fraudulent investment offers. Presenters will share tips on recognizing and reporting fraud, explain how to use the “Double-check before you invest” program, and share stories of people who have lost their life savings to fraud.

Iowa Fraud Fighter seminars are being presented by NEI RSVP volunteers with assistance from local sponsors. Northeast Iowa RSVP matches volunteers age 55 and up with opportunities to serve at non-profits in Allamakee, Howard and Winneshiek counties.

Visit www.decorah.lib.ia.us/RSVP for more information about the seminars and links to fraud fighting resources.

If your business or organization would like to host a Fraud Fighters seminar, please contact Deana Hageman at 563-382-5181 or rsvp@decorah.lib.ia.us.
