Artist, Emillia Noordhoek, will be leading a raku glazing workshop.  Noordhoek is on an extended stay from Hawaii where she co-created an art center on the island of Malaki.  She is also a potter who has studied raku in Japan and she brings her knowledge of the clay and it's firing process to ArtHaus.

The one day workshop will be held outside in the parking lot of ArtHaus at 107 West Broadway.  Participants of all ages will glaze a pre-thrown bowl with raku glaze and participate as a community in the direct fire glazing of the bowls.  The results often create a crackle effect and metalic finish.  Registration is required at arthausdecorah.org as space is limited for social distancing.  Wearing closed toe shoes and protective pants are important.

The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa’s (HSNEI) 7th annual Tails & Treasures Fundraiser will be held online this year due to COVID19. The online auction begins at 8am Sunday, September 6 and ends at 5pm Sunday, September 13. Thanks to our generous sponsors and donors, including event sponsor Northeast Iowa Solar LLC, 100% of money raised in the auction goes to helping HSNEI’s animals.

The auction features three of Tails & Treasures’ signature artist rendered statues by Carl Homstad, Bonnie Koloc, and Charlene Selbee, that can be seen at tails-treasures, and over 100 great auction packages ranging from tickets to a PGA Tournament, to getaways, to many pet packages. Thanks to the generous donation of an E-Bike from Decorah Bicycles, Tails & Treasures is selling raffle chances with 100% of money benefiting HSNEI. Raffle chances can be purchased at www.32auctions.com/HSNEI now, and the auction items go live at the same site on September 6.

Like many businesses, HSNEI has not been able to hold traditional fundraising events or be open to the public during COVID 19 concerns, so Tails & Treasures funds are crucial for supporting the Love & Friendship Adoption Center in Decorah, which serves Allamakee, Howard, Chickasaw, Fayette and Winneshiek Counties.

DECORAH, Iowa —Barnetimen (Children’s Hour) with Vesterheim, the National Norwegian-American Museum and Folk Art School, is online! Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join the first session of the new season for this monthly program on Tuesday, September 15, from 10-10:30 a.m. via livestream on vesterheim.org/live or Vesterheim’s Facebook page. A recording will be available any time after the event on Vesteheim’s YouTube channel.
Connect with Jennifer Kovarik, Vesterheim’s Youth Educator, to explore objects in the museum’s collection and make art inspired by those objects.
“This month's exploration and art activity are all about spoons, something we have a lot of at Vesterheim and that you probably have in your home, too,” Kovarik said. A list of materials and instructions for the make-at-home art project will be available before the program at vesterheim.org/program/barnetimen-childrens-hour-9-2020.
Barnetimen meets the third Tuesday of the month, September through April, from 10-10:30 a.m. and is geared toward 3-5 year olds, but all ages are welcome. The program is free of charge and no previous sign-up is necessary.
This program is sponsored by the United States Regional Arts Resilience Fund Phase 1, an initiative of Arts Midwest and its peer United States Regional Arts Organizations made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; with additional support from local sponsors David and Brenda Carlson and Norwegian Mutual Insurance Association.
With world-class exhibitions and 12 historic buildings in scenic Decorah, Iowa, Vesterheim, the national Norwegian-American museum and Folk Art School, showcases the best in historic and contemporary Norwegian folk and fine arts, and explores the American immigrant experience. This national treasure is also a center for folk-art education, offering a wide variety of classes in authentic Norwegian folk art every year. For more information on the museum’s exhibitions, classes, events, membership opportunities, and ways to donate, check Vesterheim’s website at vesterheim.org, call (563) 382-9681, or write to Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, 502 W.
