St. Andrew’s Book Fair will hold a Summer Outdoor Clearance Sale on Friday and Saturday, July 1-2, on the grounds behind the church and in Pearson Hall. Friday hours are 4 – 8 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. – Noon.  St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church is located at 406 Hillsboro in Edwardsville. In case of rain, it will be held in the Pearson Hall, the church’s parish hall.

A four-day History Camp for Kids will be held July 18-21 at the Center for Educational Opportunities, 201 Staunton Road, Troy, Illinois. Geared for Madison County students aged 9-11, each day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m., and will include a field trip to an historic site in Madison County and history-based learning activities.

The cost per child is $100 which includes transportation to the sites, entry fees, educational materials, and snacks. Participants must bring a sack lunch each day.

Campers will visit the Lewis and Clark Museum, the National Great Rivers Lock and Dam, the Confluence Tower, the Phillips 66 Museum of the Petroleum Industry, the Phillips 66 Refinery, a Lincoln-Douglas debate site, an Underground Railroad tunnel, and other historic sites related to the Abolitionist Movement. Participants should expect to do outdoor walking, often on uneven terrain.

The camp is a first-time collaborative effort between the Madison County Historical Society and the Madison County Regional Office of Education 41. All the camp coordinators have a background in historical studies and will provide instruction and guidance for the camp. The coordinators include Norma Asadorian, an educator and historian, Carol Manning, former education coordinator for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, and Dr. Robert Daiber, former Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools. Additional historians, re-enactors, and staff also will provide learning experiences, supervision and support.

Chamber members are invited to attend Pedego Palooza at Pedego Electric Bikes in Edwardsville for a 10-mile bike ride on the MCT Trails followed by lunch and prizes. Rental bikes are available for anyone who is not already an owner. 

If you already own a Pedego Electric Bike, prizes will be awarded for the following:

1. Best decorated bike – Put some bling on your Pedego. Be creative, let your enthusiasm be your guide.

2. Most Miles - Awarded to the Pedego owner having the most miles showing on the LCD screen odometer.

3. Mile Markers Pins - Please let us know if you will be reaching one of the Mile Markers so we can present you with your pin.

The “Stuff the Bus” campaign will be July 30 from 10am until 2pm at OfficeMax in Glen Carbon. The donated items will then be distributed to students through the Glen-Ed Pantry.

From Obscurity to Greatness: Illinois and Lincoln, 1830-1861
The Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau Presents Kevin Wood as Abraham Lincoln on Sat., July 30 from 5 pm-7 pm. Happening at the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum, this free event is open to the public. The museum is also offering special museum hours to accommodate visitors, opening at 1 pm on Saturday and closing at 8 pm. Refreshments will also be served.
 
The presentation will take place at the museum located at 124 School St. in its backyard pavilion. This first-person portrayal of Abraham Lincoln is comprised of Wood in period dress while captivating audience members with a variety of stories and historical references. Highlighting his Illinois years, his presentation is entitled “From Obscurity to Greatness: Illinois and Lincoln, 1830-1861”. The heart of the presentation involves Mr. Lincoln detailing his life in Illinois, engaging the audience along the way. The program normally lasts one hour followed by a Q&A, photos, and informal interaction. 

Kevin Wood is a professional Abraham Lincoln presenter that bears an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Lincoln. As an Illinois Road Scholar, Wood makes hundreds of appearances throughout the year, also writing a blog entitled “Loath to Close…Still!” that encourages other to reflect upon and learn from President Lincoln’s life.
