Conversations About Dementia & Driver Safety for the Aging Driver – Free Virtual Presentation

Wednesday, April 7, 2021
10:00am to noon

This class will be offered virtually, join online or by phone.

Pre-registration required.
Register online at tinyurl.com/DemConv040721 or call 800.272.3900

In this 2-hour workshop, come learn strategies to talk to a loved one about difficult topics related to dementia and to prolonged driving independence.

PART 1 – DEMENTIA CONVERSATIONS: DRIVING, DOCTOR VISITS, LEGAL & FINANCIAL PLANNING
When someone is showing signs of dementia, it’s time to talk. Often, conversations with family about changing behaviors can be challenging and uncomfortable. This program provides tips for breaking the ice with your family so you can address some of the most common issues that are difficult to discuss: going to the doctor for a diagnosis or medical treatment, deciding when to stop driving, and making legal and financial plans for future care.

PART 2 - DRIVER SAFETY AND THE AGING DRIVER
Hear ideas for safe, prolonged driving independence from the local DMV Senior Driver Ombudsman. Topics will include: driver license renewal strategies, DMV criteria for evaluation of Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive or physical impairments, and how your health is closely connected to your driving.

Co-hosted by Passages Caregiver Resource Center

The National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Firewise USA Program encourages local solutions for safety by
involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing their homes from the risk of wildfire. Firewise
is a key component of Fire Adapted Communities or a collaborative approach that connects all those who play
a role in wildfire education, planning, and action with comprehensive resources to help reduce risk. To save lives and property from wildfire, NFPA's Firewise USA program teaches people how to adapt to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. For more details visit nfpa.org

For Earth Day, Thursday April 22nd, the series will culminate with a panel of speakers sharing their experiences with recreation as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Faith E. Briggs is a film-maker and producer who is passionate about sharing contemporary stories from diverse communities. Her inspiring film “This Land” will be shown at the event and while she Zooms in from her home in Portland.

Mario Guel is the founder of Taco Fly Co., a fly-fishing lifestyle brand. Mario loves fly fishing, and Mario loves tacos! His focus on opening up a stuffy white activity to more folks from right here in Plumas County is pretty inspiring.

Nizhoni O’Connell grew up in Greenville in a mixed-race family: her mother is Navajo, her father from Irish descent. She attended FRC in the Outdoor Recreation Leadership program, then went on to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.

This diverse group will help the audience find common ground, acknowledge that racism exists in the recreation field, and feel more open to discussion about the topic. DeRuiter, also a professor of Environmental Studies and Outdoor Recreation Leadership, will host the event.

For more information on any events in the series, contact DeRuiter at dderuiter@frc.edu or 530.283.0202 x262.

Are you a small business owner who would like to manage your own social media marketing (or perhaps understand better what you're hiring someone for)? My next class is for you! Open to the public, this one-hour live Zoom class will be next Wednesday at noon. Space is limited!
More info: 👉 Small business owners face a unique challenge when it comes to marketing- you don’t have the resources to hire a professional marketing company, but you’re also so busy running your business that you don’t have the time to figure it out yourself. As part of the Business of Art series, this class will provide simple step-by-step plans you can do on your own time and your own budget. Promoting yourself is never easy, let’s take the pain out of the process and learn the secrets the big marketing companies don’t want you to know!
To register: https://bit.ly/32zkMNB
This intro class will teach participants:
- How to build your brand online with social media, storytelling, and calls-to-action
- An overview of the most used social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, etc., and an exploration of which ones will work best for you
- How to set up your accounts (i.e. the differences between business and personal pages, groups, and events), how to build accounts that grow, and what mistakes to avoid
- A guide to WHAT to post, WHERE, and WHEN to post it
- Participants will learn simple social media hacks to save time and also the basic rules of each platform to make sure you don’t get put in ‘Instagram Jail’ (this is a thing…). If time allows, we will dip into data to view what is working and what’s not.
Participants will leave with a concrete to-do list to get started and will receive a downloadable PDF of ‘What to Post’ as well as a ‘Content Calendar.’
This class is presented online through Zoom. The class link will be emailed one day before the start of the class and part II will be offered the following week. Thank you to Steamboat Creates for hosting this series!
