To ensure the safety of camp participants and MCCB staff, while still providing environmental education opportunities, we have decided to modify this year's Discovery Day Camps.

Camps will still require pre-registration, but we will not be hosting a regular in-person "camp" at the Nature Center.

Each week, your registered student will receive a themed activity packet filled with various items to help them discover more about nature. These items can include activity sheets, outdoor gear, and nature-discovery tools that will be yours to keep.

At the start time of "camp", there may be a pre-recorded instructional video available online and/or a hands-off outdoor group activity introducing the week's theme or demonstrating some of the packet activities. This group activity will take place outside of the Milton R. Owen Nature Center for those registered and available to attend. All current social distancing recommendations will still be maintained during the demonstration.

Packets will be available for pickup all day during office hours on your child's camp day, but in-person demonstration will only take place at the start of "camp" time.

Age/Grade ranges are based on the 2020-2021 school year.

All of the following camps require pre-registration. Registration fees cover cost of activity materials.

Packets will be available for pick-up at the Milton R. Owen Nature Center in a labeled tote located by the door.

Registration due by Wednesday, June 24th!

Please call, email, visit our Facebook Page, or www.mycountyparks.com to register.

Even though the Nature Center is closed, and Naturalist Chelsea is unable to visit students at school and at the county care facilities (she's working on some online program access ideas!), we want to encourage you to get outside and explore! Our wildlife areas, river and trout stream accesses, and trails are OPEN, and a great way to get some healthful fresh air and sunshine while still practicing safe "social distancing".
We are thinking of doing a "Photo Checklist" of these outdoor activities, entering you for a prize from MCCB at the end of the year! Make a copy of the list, and send us selfies/photos of you and your family enjoying these outdoor experiences - bonus points if they are with or from MCCB activities and areas! We'll keep track of them in and award mini-prizes to participants Monthly!

So you’re wanting to follow the current safety protocols, yet you are itching to compete and keep your athletic edge or you are hoping to improve your health. In either case, you need a race to train for . . . a race to give you Sunshine & Sanity.
Each month, on the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of April-August, the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail is hosting a Virtual 5K Race window. This is not a group race/run, but instead an individual 5K that is tracked online! Racers will be required to download the RaceJoy App and run with their phone. The course route has been developed and mapped by the Wapsi-Great Western Line Trail. Upon completion, you may submit the recorded time or simply submit “Finished It!”. Racers' times and completions will then be compiled and posted online. All competitors (timed submissions and finishers) will be entered in a monthly give-away. Prizes will be purchased at local businesses to support Iowa’s small business community. Winners will be notified by contact information provided during online race registration. Prizes will be available for pick-up during the following month’s race window. With each passing month, we hope racers become stronger, enjoy the sunshine and keep their sanity. See all rules for the Sunshine & Sanity Run in the following link, including how COVID-19 Public Health requirements are to be observed. https://runsignup.com/Race/IA/Riceville/SunshineSanity
