The musical intermingles over twenty hit songs like Bei Mir Bist Du Schon, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. A painting and a fabric collage by Brian Severns.
Brian Severns finds inspiration in the awkward, the inconsistent, and the dissonant—perspectives that appear incorrect, organic matter overtaking architectural structures, or obstructions blocking a path. He appreciates the unpredictable geometry of kilims, mud cloths, and Native American weaving. Navajo rugs, in particular, seem to constantly subvert their own rules of design through both planning and human error. The incongruity of patterning—and breaking from that expected pattern—creates a slight visual tension and mild surprise.

Primarily using collage, Severns documents his life’s events like a form of journaling, with paint or fabric. Dog walks in the woods, in particular, become events of interest. By assigning a color or shape to memory, Severns owns, processes, and reminisces on his experiences that much more.

About the Artist
After living in New Jersey, New York, and New Hampshire, Brian Severns now calls Minneapolis, Minnesota home. Severns received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a Master of Fine Arts from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, where he went on to teach painting and drawing. Severns currently shows work nationally and internationally, and enjoys trail running with his Weimaraner, Louise.

Presented by:

  &

On Saturday, August 10th, 2019, enter the enchanting world of multi-award-winning international opera singer and Stillwater native, Jack Swanson, and other special guests, for an interactive live outdoor concert of opera and musical theatre favorites at Lowell Park in Stillwater, MN titled, “Opera on the River”. The event will take the audience on a fantastic journey throughout the ages. During the concert, members of Stillwater and the greater St. Croix Valley region, will enjoy a magical experience: they will become passengers on “the river” and explore the power of love and inspiration with the sounds of swashbuckling heroic opera arias, all the way to romantic duets, and entertaining musical theatre hits. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Opera on the River” will take place on Saturday, August 10 at 7 p.m. in Lowell Park, downtown Stillwater, MN. This is a free event and the park will open to the public at noon. Picnic items; blankets, chairs, and picnic baskets are welcome and encouraged in order to claim your space on the park lawn for an enjoyable afternoon as you wait for the concert to begin. Contact Operatunity Theatre at OperaOnTheRiver@OperatunityTheatre.org to inquire about becoming a sponsor for the event, or to become a patron, please visit our online donation page: https://www.givemn.org/story/Operaontheriver, and consider making a contribution to help fund “Opera on the River” this coming August.

Opera on the River” comes to Lowell Park direct from Operatunity Theatre and Rouse Legacy with support from the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street Stillwater Independent Business Alliance, the Discover Stillwater Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Saint Croix Valley Regional Tourism Alliance, Amadè Music, Inc., and The Zephyr Theatre. Jack Swanson and friends will welcome local residents of the St. Croix Valley area and greater Twin Cities metro of all ages and will introduce them to a new vision for the future of annual music offerings for the region. Live local musicians, orchestra and singers alike, accompanying the headliners, will create the most meaningful, memorable atmosphere that everyone in attendance will continue to hum all year long.

“I cannot wait to return to Stillwater this August for our concert in Lowell Park.  From the very beginning of my music career, this town’s community has supported me and several of my friends in our performing endeavors and for that, I am extremely grateful.  My friends and I will perform several of the familiar musical theater classics and hopefully introduce you to some great music you’ve never heard before.  Through Operatunity Theatre, we’re hoping that this event is only the beginning of bringing fantastic, professional music offerings to our little town of Stillwater and the greater St. Croix Valley region.” -Jack Swanson

More information about Jack Swanson and “Opera on the River” can be found at: https://operatunitytheatre.org/opera-on-the-river/

“Our primary goal for the 2019 summer festival project “Opera on the River” is to provide the highest quality music production in the form of a live outdoor concert for the community of Stillwater and the surrounding region. We hope this project will serve as an example of our ongoing plans to enrich the supportive community of the greater St. Croix Valley, advancing the arts in this region to the next level. We envision our company creating a range of summer events in the region built in part on the model of the nationally known Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts. Given the wealth of venue locations around the Twin Cities East Metro area, with the idyllic scenery of Stillwater as home base, we feel it’s time to bring a nationally, if not internationally recognized music festival together through multiple partnerships with established performing arts companies of the region. We also hope to expand our activities beyond the summer season.” -Obed Floan, Operatunity Theatre
