What is Sunrise Corvallis?

Sunrise Corvallis is our local chapter of the Sunrise Movement, which is a youth-led movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. Sunrise Corvallis has been focusing on applying Green New Deal principles at the local level, focusing on equitable climate policy and a stable economy.

What is the Corvallis Green New Deal?

The Corvallis Green New Deal is a proposed resolution that aims to address the climate crisis head on and build community resiliency in the process. It builds on and updates the 2016 Climate Action Plan and provides actionable policies for the city to work with.

There are six primary goals of the Corvallis Green New Deal are:

  1. The City will work to secure clean air and water, climate and community resiliency, healthy food, access to nature, and a sustainable environment for all people of Corvallis for generations to come.

  2. The City will ensure continued, ample funding and accountability in pursuit of the goals of the CGND informed by an evaluation of the current strengths and weaknesses of the CAAB and other relevant advisory boards.

  3. The City will achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the net-zero transition within the Corvallis Community by transforming and re-imagining the systems in which residents live, work and play.

  4. The City will ensure a Just Transition by investing in stable, well-paying, green jobs, especially in vulnerable communities; supporting job training for those transitioning from employment in fossil fuel and other extractive industries; and protecting labor unions.

  5. The City will invest in the people and businesses of Corvallis and the sustainable growth of our economy through low-carbon, climate-resilient, and equitable infrastructure, including housing, food & water, emergency response, and human infrastructure in order to prepare for increasing climate disasters and a foreseeable influx in climate refugees.

  6. The City will promote justice and equity by stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of Indigenous peoples, communities of color, migrant communities, the poor, low-income workers, women, the elderly, the unhoused, people with disabilities, and youth, hereafter referred to as “frontline and vulnerable communities”.

After viewing the presentation, we will ask Chamber of Commerce members and other community members to fill out this anonymous survey to provide feedback to Sunrise Corvallis on the strengths and weaknesses of the Corvallis Green New Deal.
