Duckett Creek Public Hearings Duckett Creek Sanitary District will be conducting public hearings on its proposed rate increase for sewer service.
The hearings will be on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. at their office located at 3550 Highway K, O'Fallon, MO 63368.
Executive Director Chuck Gross says the hearings are a chance for the public to give their opinion on the proposed rate increase and to receive information on what the additional funds will be used for.
Gross said "The main need for the additional revenue is to pay for many crucial maintenance and capital items. The proposed rate increases are $3.00 per month for residential customers and $.42 per 1,000 gallons used per month for commercial customers. Even with these increases Duckett Creek is still one of the lowest cost sewer providers in the county," said Gross. The District board last decided to raise rates in 2009.
Much of the Duckett Creek infrastructure is over 20 years old and maintenance costs are increasing. Further, new requirements from the EPA and Missouri Department of Natural Resources are adding to the strain in the District's budget. Besides user rates, Duckett collects fees from new connections to its system. The economic slowdown has all but dried up this source of revenue. Rates are about the only source of revenue they have to operate from. District expenses continue to climb so without significant connection fees, rates will need to go up to keep up with increased expenses.
