September is a big month for our Chamber. We’re in the midst of a membership drive, and our T3 event on Sept. 19 features axe-throwing in the waterfront backdrop of the lovely Cedar Knoll restaurant. The opportunity to network will even carry over into October with our Big Bash in conjunction with the Mount Vernon Lee and Greater Springfield chambers on Oct. 17. Read on for details about all these exciting opportunities. Dare I say it? This is ROI prime time!
September Membership Drive Needs Your Help
September is back to business after summer fun. SFCC is kicking off the Fall with a fun and thrilling membership drive.
All hands on deck for letting friends and family know that the SFCC is a must-have resource to stay informed of the changes in the southern part of the county. As a member, you can be a beacon of light to many others by helping them be the neighbor in the know and the business taking the right actions by joining the SFCC today. It’s a one-time lifetime membership, and your friends and family and local businesses will thank you for sharing this amazing local resource.
TWO EASY STEPS: 1. Word of mouth – It’s as simple as sharing the membership drive with others. Feel free to forward this newsletter. 2. Submitting name and contact information to Kevin Tracy, the SFCC membership recruiter, by emailing email@example.com. He will follow-up and answer any questions.
Tracey Wood, the SFCC Membership Chair, believes, “Chambers are a great resource for 'building community one membership at a time.' I want everyone in the community to feel the amazing sense of belonging and a part of the community's development.”
Let the community gratitude begin!
Flippin Steel's mobile axe-throwing range is coming to Cedar Knoll on Sept. 19. All throws will be actively monitored to ensure safety and maximize fun.
What: Thirsty Thursday When: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 19 Where: Cedar Knoll Address: 9030 Lucia Lane, Alexandria, VA 22308
One-of-a-Kind T3 to Feature Axe Throwing!
Get ready for a Thirsty Thursday like no other. The Sept. 19 event will feature a mobile axe-throwing range provided by Flippin Steel. Yes, that’s right. You’ll get the chance to throw an axe, and it will be under the guidance of a company that puts safety first. Everyone, regardless of experience, will be given personal instruction.
“There’s a level of satisfaction and catharsis that happens when the axe makes a solid hit that you can’t get any other way,” said Michael Dickerson, the founder of Flippin Steel. “Seeing the axe bite into the wood and hearing that “thunk” is a visceral experience. The fact that you’re throwing something that “shouldn’t be thrown”—a divergence from “polite society” if you will—gives the experience an element of rebelliousness that speaks to our inner adventurer: even if just for a moment, we get to be a pioneer, a champion, a warrior."
And if that’s not enough of an incentive to attend the T3, consider this. You’ll be networking and axe throwing at Cedar Knoll, a historic restaurant with sweeping views of the Potomac. Happy hour prices will be in effect. See you there!
* Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services will be on hand to collect candy donations for its Trunk or Treat event at Colchester Towne Center on Halloween.
Registration Open for Big Bash
This is another can't-miss networking event. In lieu of October's Thirsty Thursday, the SFCC is joining with the Mount Vernon Lee and Greater Springfield chambers for the Big Bash Business Associates Social Hour.
The Big Bash will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Springfield. There will be complimentary appetizers, door prizes and a cash bar. The event is free, but registration is required.

Board Member Highlight:
Peter Weyland, his fiancée Allison Mills and two of his dogs.
Peter Weyland has been a resident of Lorton for more than 43 years and has been active in supporting the greater community. Seeking a way to improve our business community and recognizing that other chambers were not representing this portion of the county, Peter helped give birth to the South Fairfax Chamber of Commerce along with co-founders Tim Rizer, the late Marvin “Shep" Crow and the help of local community members. The business model was different as with changing times an innovative approach was sought to better service our community. The decision was to go “virtual.” Today our South Fairfax Chamber has more than 225 members and has set a precedent for a new business model for chambers of commerce.
Peter has owned various businesses from an automobile service business in Alexandria to a product marketing company creating and marketing unique products. Envisioning the opportunity that the Internet presented, he started Look.Net LC in 1995 and hosts websites and provides broadcast email services for more than 400 clients. Along with his interest in the community, he offers broadcast email to the great Mason Neck and Lorton communities. His interest in promoting communications and supporting commerce locally led to his involvement with the Mason Neck Citizens Association, the South County Federation and the Lorton Community Action Center. He has been a board member for a number of local organizations.
Peter lives on Mason Neck and enjoys the beauty and serenity of the river, his pack of dogs and local wildlife. He participates with his fiancée Allison Mills in supporting her efforts at the local Stables at Meadowood. His interest in promoting the greater Lorton community is a big part of his daily life.
Welcome to our New Members
The SFCC would like to extend a warm welcome to Sylvia Chonya of Harmony at Spring Hill, Lynn Gulick of Sandy Spring Bank and Jennifer Schweikert of JMS reDesigns,
Special Thanks to the Laurel Hill Golf Club
Our continuing thanks to Laurel Hill Golf Club and General Manager Ryan Carmen for offering meeting facilities free of charge to the Chamber for our monthly Board of Directors meetings throughout the year.
