Nikki's Next Step Launches $8 Million Capital Campaign to Build Inclusive Housing Community for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilitie

(PHOENIX, May 18, 2026) Nikki’s Next Step (NNS), a new inclusive housing community designed for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), has officially launched an $8 million capital campaign to help bring the transformative Glendale project to life.

Developed by Phoenix-based nonprofit One Step Beyond Inc. (OSBI), Nikki’s Next Step will provide safe, affordable, long-term housing and supportive community living for adults with IDD. The project addresses a growing need facing families across Arizona: the severe shortage of affordable housing options that offer both independence and on-site support services.

Located at 6612 W. Paradise Lane in Glendale, the community will feature one- and two-bedroom condominiums designed to foster independence, social connection and security for residents. Construction of the 57 housing units is expected to begin in late 2026, with the community opening in early 2028.

“The launch of this campaign marks a major milestone for Nikki’s Next Step and for families who have spent years worrying about what the future will look like for their loved ones,” said One Step Beyond CEO Jeff Swanson. “This community is about dignity, belonging and creating a permanent home where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities can thrive.”

The capital campaign goal represents approximately 30 percent of the project’s estimated $25 million total cost. Campaign leaders say community support will be critical to helping make the vision a reality.

“Nikki’s Next Step is more than housing…it’s a community built around inclusion, safety and meaningful connection,” said John Micheaels, campaign co-chair. “We’re inviting individuals, businesses and philanthropic partners to invest in a project that will positively impact families for generations.”

The project has already achieved several major milestones, including the purchase of more than three acres in Glendale and City of Glendale rezoning approval granted on March 24, 2026.

Families of adults with IDD often face uncertainty about long-term care and housing when parents or caregivers are no longer able to provide support. Nikki’s Next Step aims to offer a sustainable solution by combining affordable homeownership opportunities with an intentionally designed supportive environment.

Campaign organizers are currently seeking founding donors, corporate partners and community champions to help fund the project’s next phase.
