About Us

Founded in 1926, the Theatre Guild of Webster Groves began as a small group of passionate neighbors who simply loved making theatre together, and that spirit of community still defines us today. In our early years, productions popped up in churches, school auditoriums, and at The Monday Club of Webster Groves, where creativity flourished and lifelong friendships were formed. By 1931, the Guild was already making a wider impact with its One-Act Playwriting Contest (later the Russell Sharp Drama Fair), which drew playwrights from across the country. In 1936, a young Tennessee Williams, then known as Tom Williams, won the contest with The Magic Tower, a moment we’re still proud to count as part of our story.

Today, the Guild calls a historic 1909 building on Theatre Lane home, a space lovingly cared for by generations of volunteers since its opening as a theatre in 1953. As a designated City of Webster Groves Historic Site, it’s more than just a building—it’s a place where creativity, collaboration, and community come together. Each season, we produce five shows filled with heart, humor, and talent, all brought to life by volunteers who direct, perform, design, build, and welcome audiences through our doors. Whether you’re stepping onstage, working behind the scenes, or taking a seat in the audience, the Theatre Guild offers a warm, welcoming home for anyone who believes in the magic of live theatre.
