Consider the Future of the Library

San Juan Island Library

The San Juan Island Library will hold a series of public open houses to present the findings of a recent architectural review of the state of its facilities, and possible future options for the Library building.  Staff from SHKS Architects conducted the review, and will be in attendance to present their findings, in addition to members of the Library's board of trustees and staff.  Each open house will feature a short presentation on the current status of the building, and the challenges and opportunities that the structure will encounter in the face of a growing island community and a world of rapidly changing library services.   After the presentation, the public will be able to visit information stations around the room where more detailed information will be available, including urgent problems that will most likely need to be addressed in the near term, and some of the services that could be provided if space were available.  The public is invited to attend, and, especially, to give input on future directions.
There will be three open houses, all at the San Juan Island Grange Hall:
             Sunday, May 20th from 3:00 – 5:00 PM
                Sunday, May 20th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM
                Monday, May 21st from 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Harry and Snowman;  a heart warming tale: Dutch immigrant, Harry deLeyer, journeyed to the United States after World War II and developed a transformative relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse he rescued off a slaughter truck bound for the glue factory. Harry paid eighty dollars for the horse and named him Snowman. In less than two years, Harry & Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nations blue bloods. They were famous for their day and traveled around the world together. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Eighty-six year old Harry tells their Cinderella love story firsthand, as he continues to train on today's show jumping circuit.

New Art Exhibit

Lavendera Massage on Spring Street is pleased to announce that we have just installed a new art exhibit featuring the innovative works of local artist, Jennifer Fay Rice.
Please join us for this fun event and meet the artist on Saturday May 19th, 7:00 pm ~ 9:00 pm. We look forward to seeing you there! 285 Spring Street, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island.
It started with a line from an old movie: “I searched the world to find inspiration, and I found it in those who live in their dreams.” For Jennifer, those were words to live by. Today those words encourage her art. As she explains, “Every time we create, we live both in our dreams and in the present and we bring forth new energy to share with those willing to join in our creations. Art invites us to take time to be present to something outside of ourselves. It speaks to each person differently, touching different emotions and sometimes healing in mysterious ways.
