QUCC: Movie: "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1927 Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey. Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious cornet player Levee— who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry— spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.

Branford Marsalis’ score punctuates this film that celebrates the transformative power of the blues and the artists who refuse to let society’s prejudices dictate their worth. Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom features best actress/ actor award winning performances by Viola Davis as Ma Rainey and Chadwick Boseman.

Runtime is 94 minutes • This Biographic music film is Rated R for language, some sexual content and brief violence •

Annual Lake Almanor Memorial Weekend Craft Fair is back!

The Lake Almanor Memorial Craft Fair hosted by Rotary Club of Chester at Chester Community Park will be held on Saturday and Sunday May 29 and 30th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

“We are excited to host the 24th annual Crafts Fair with up to 55 vendors participating who are thrilled ‘to be back’ to share their unique hand-crafted products with our many guests and community,” says Cheri McIntire, event coordinator. “Each year we have craft enthusiasts who go straight to our ‘regulars’ buying their much-loved items and then spend the rest of the afternoon discovering some of the newest artisans we are so lucky to have come to our area,” adds McIntire. Rotary Club of Chester has been coordinating the fair since 2013 with each year bringing new artisans and shoppers to enjoy a day of shopping.

As with all events, Rotary will support all mandates issued by Plumas County but expect a full-house and a fun event for buyers and sellers.  For application, please click here and for more information please contact lakealmanormemorialdaycraftfair@yahoo.com.

About this Event

Paddlers  (kayak, canoe, SUP) *NMV (Non-Motorized Vessels only)

This is a five-card poker run on the water from Canyon Dam Boat Launch to Plumas Pines Resort along the west shore of the 8th largest reservoir (Lake Almanor) in California.  It’s 10 miles roundtrip!  See Course Map below!

So what's a Poker Run?

Paddlers will make 5 shore stops at 3 different locations to pick up 5 poker cards, which make up the poker hand. First and second place prizes awarded to the paddlers with the best poker hand.

Bring your own non-motorized vessel (NMV) and safety equipment to the starting/finish line at the Canyon Dam Boat Launch. Equipment is also available for rent in our area.

Why travel to Lake Almanor?

Lake Almanor is a stunningly beautiful lake in the Sierra/Cascade Mountains, with a maximum surface elevation of about 4500 feet (see our website for pics: www.yourARPD.org).  The surface water temperatures can reach 65 to 70 + degrees. The west shore of Lake Almanor has great campgrounds, RV parks, cabins and associated resort restaurants, cafes, bars and swimming areas.

CLAC: 20th Annual Lake Almanor Peninsula Arts & Crafts Faire

The 20th Annual Arts and Crafts Faire presented by the Lake Almanor Community Foundation will be September 4, 2021 from 10am to 4pm at LACC Recreation Area 1.

Shoppers will enjoy the distinctive talents of 40 artisans and craftsmen showcasing a wide range of unique handcrafted jewelry, pottery, clothing, home décor, fine art, metal work, personal care products and much more.

“All our vendors are juried so that we offer quality items as well as a variety of products to support our artisans and give our guests a fun afternoon to find the ideal piece of home décor or perfect gift,” says Jessie King, event coordinator.

This year LACF will be holding a "WeMakeIt" Drawing. Vendors can donate a product of their choice to be shown at the Artisan Exhibitor’s Display accompanied by their booth number. Shoppers can purchase tickets and place them in jars below the product(s) they hope to win.

“We think this will be a great ‘add-on’ for our shoppers to have the opportunity ‘to win’ something and help our vendors show-off their wares and get everyone to all the booths,” adds King.

For crafters, attached is link to applications . . . and for shoppers – please put date on your calendar.  It is a wonderful way to spend a day at Lake Almanor enjoying crafts, food and more!

CLAC: 7th Annual Courage Triathlon

Lake Almanor Country Club will host the 7th annual Courage Triathlon, an event that raises funds to benefit the rescue of sex-trafficked children, to be held Sept. 11.

“Due to COVID, we were not able to hold a live race last year and also had to find a new location due to on-going mandates,” said Director Dawn Hershberger. “We were adamant about keeping it at Lake Almanor since we have had terrific support for the event over the years.”

Dawn and coordinator Joanne Vice are laying out new routes that are estimated to be a 2.9-mile run, 5.6-mile bike ride and the 3.1-mile kayak leg, with residents in LACC assisting and already excited about putting together their relay teams.

“We are pleased to have this event held at LACC and know the LACC community will be out in full-force to support as sponsors, participants or cheerleaders,” said Ed Organ, president of LACC board. Registration on Sept. 10 will be hosted by Clifford’s Restaurant and the Peninsula Fire Department will be serving breakfast burritos the day of the event at Rec 1.

Over the past seven years, this event has raised more than $150,000 to combat the trafficking of children and support their long-term recovery.  For more information or to become a sponsor, please go to www.courageworldwide.org, contact triathlon@courageworldwide.org.
