| 2/4/2025 | The goal of the Leavenworth-Lansing Area Chamber's Military Affairs Council (MAC) is to advance the pro-business climate in the area through military affairs initiatives, and to maintain and enhance the business community's relationship with Fort Leavenworth. The Military Affairs Council works to grow and sustain not only Fort Leavenworth, but other Department of Defense operations in the area. The MAC functions as a liaison between the local military and business communities, implementing programs which provide greater interaction between Chamber members and DOD/military personnel. The MAC hosts various events throughout the year that help to further our community relationships and honor military service. MAC Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month. To access post please obtain a visitor pass online: https://home.army.mil/.../all-services/gate-information Presentation Topic: Western University was an educational institution that trained and educated predominately African American students in Quindaro, Kansas, from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Quindaro is located approximately 30 miles south east of Fort Leavenworth. This presentation examines the university’s contributions to the U.S. Army from 1917 to 1918 during World War I. The examination includes a brief synopsis of the origins of Western University, its educational contributions to the local community before the war, the U.S. Government vocational training program, the U.S. Army’s involvement in the vocational program, the impact of the war on civilian students on Western’s campus, and finally Western’s significant contribution to the war effort through its involvement in the vocational program. This examination will support Western University’s little-known claim to the Governor of Kansas in 1918 that it was one of the best educational institutions in the nation not only for its academic achievements but also for its simultaneous contribution to victory training U.S. Army soldiers in its vocational training program. About the speaker: Bernard Harris, Ph.D., is an adult education historian serving as an Instructional Systems Specialist (Quality Assurance) at the Center for Army Leadership (CAL) at Fort Leavenworth. His dissertation reflects his research interests in adult education and history titled The Education and Training of Seven African American U.S. Army Officers for World War I and its Aftermath. Additional examples of his work can be found in the Ethnic and Racial Minorities in the U.S. Military: An Encyclopedia; a co-authored book titled Savannah 1779; and in adult education articles focused on flipped classrooms, accreditation, and assessments, published by the Association for Business Simulation and Experiential Learning (ABSEL). He also wrote the article “Jim Crow in Kansas: African American Life during the Era of Segregation” published in A Journal of the Central Plains (Volume 45, Number 2 | Summer 2022). The First City Chamber Music Society will play the prelude to the concert, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The performances are free and open to the public.

Those remaining in the stadiums fought the wars from home, striving to protect the morale of civilian society. Despite the respite the sport provided for its athletes and spectators in times of conflict, racial inequality in the late 19th and early 20th centuries excluded African Americans from mainstream leagues, spurring the creation of the National Colored Base Ball League and the Negro National League. In many ways, baseball was a mirror of the United States—reflecting both its issues and its hopes. Explore the wartime legacy of America’s favorite pastime with historian Phil Dixon in conversation with Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

When war broke out in 1861, Christian and Elise Dubach Isely, soon to be married, found themselves in the midst of the conflict. Having witnessed the atrocities of Bleeding Kansas firsthand and fearful of what would come from this war, Christian enlisted with the 2nd Kansas Cavalry to fight alongside Union forces. During the next three years, the couple would write hundreds of letters to each other, as well as to friends and family members. Their writings survive today, providing a unique look at the Civil War--one of both military and civilian perspectives--in a passionate exchange between husband and wife in which the war, faith and family are discussed openly and frankly. About the presenter: Mr. Spurgeon was born and raised in Wichita. He earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s from Wichita State University in History while additionally compiling hours in Secondary Education: Social Studies. He is an Associate Professor of History at Friends University. He has spent over 20 years teaching at the High School and College level. Mr. Spurgeon is the author of “A Kansas Soldier at War: The Civil War Lives and Letters of Christian and Elise Dubach Isely,” published by The History Press, Charleston, SC, 2013. From 2004 until 2018, he was the Executive Director of Lone Chimney Films, Inc., a not-for-profit documentary film company dedicated to films about the Midwest. He has written or co-written and directed four documentaries. The last two films (Home on the Range and The Road to Valhalla) have earned the Western Heritage Award (Wrangler) at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, 2018 and 2015. The previous three films have also aired on various PBS stations throughout the Midwest. He recently served as the writer and director for the film Sod and Stubble based on the classic tale by the same name written by John Ise with Von Rothenberger.
