The 30th annual event as the Turkey Shoot Regatta--in support of local Hospice Services--is one of the largest (as many as 142 boats) sailing regattas in the Chesapeake and will be held on the Rappahannock River off Carter Creek from Oct.3-5th. Co-sponsored by local yacht clubs Rappahannock River Yacht Club in Irvington and Yankee Point Yacht Club of Lancaster, the land-based activities will be at the RRYC facility on Rappahannock Rd in Irvington.  Google: HospiceTurkeyShoot Regatta, com for details, maps, registration information and a schedule of events. Many of the land-based events such as the cocktail party on Friday and the dinner Saturday night and the lunch and awards event on Sunday afternoon are open to the public and souvenirs and other refreshments will be available for purchase.

This time this is also considered to be a memorial event in honor of John McConnico who co-founded this race in 1989 with colleague Chuck Harney while at the Yankee point Marina. John passed away this past spring and wife Carole Jean will be helping us preserve his memory across all the years she and John had made this event such a success as a fund-raiser.

Rappahannock River Yacht Club to host “Halloween Spooktacular” lighted boat parade

The  Rappahannock River Yacht Club  (RRYC) is hosting the “Halloween Spooktacular” boat parade on Friday October 17th 2025. The parade will follow much the same format as the previous holiday boat parades. Boats and spectators are welcome!

Beginning shortly after sundown which is 6:25PM, the parade will take place on the waters of Carters Creek beginning near Custom Yacht Service (96 Seafood Lane, Irvington, VA).  Boats will cruise from there past the RRYC docks (100 Rappahannock Rd, Irvington,  VA) where judging will take place.  From there they will proceed up the creek past the Tides Inn.  Skippers will be safely guided along the route in the dark by RRYC club boats.  Boats will be judged in a variety of categories with prizes to be awarded during the afterparty in the RRYC clubhouse.

This is a Northern Neck-wide community event.  Not limited to RRYC members, the public is invited and welcome to participate in the parade and to come watch the parade from RRYC club docks.  All parade participants are also welcome and encouraged to attend the Halloween Spooktacular afterparty full of fun, food and prizes for winning boats.

Skippers are encouraged to use their imagination and turn their boats, sail, power, electric Duffy, and yes even steam powered into their best interpretation of Halloween.  And remember, there’s no such thing as too many lights.

RRYC will be open for parade viewing beginning at 6:30pm.  Everyone’s welcome, especially children (wear your costumes kids) with adult supervision to come and enjoy hot cider and treats while watching the spectacular display of brightly illuminated Halloween themed boats pass by while cheering for crowd favorites.

Participation in the parade and the after party is free, compliments of Rappahannock River Yacht Club, as is the public’s welcome to club grounds and docks for viewing.  However, registration for the parade and after party is necessary for planning purposes.

For complete details about this event and to register go to the Rappahannock River Yacht Club website at https://rryc.org.

Kate Livie - Saltwater Showmen: The James Adams Floating Theater, 1914-1941

Join Chesapeake author and historian Kate Livie for a presentation about the "Chesapeake's Showboat," The James Adams Floating Theater. From 1914 to 1941, the James Adams Floating Theater enchanted riverside small towns and cities throughout the Chesapeake’s tributaries with theater productions, musicals, and other entertainment. Long after its circuit was abandoned for motion pictures, the legacy of the magical little showboat lived on in the memories of its audiences. In her talk, Livie will share images, stories, and history about the Floating Theater, its national impact, and the ways it shaped life in the Chesapeake for almost 30 years.

Join The Bookshelf on Church + The Lancaster Community Library for our Right to Read Night, an evening dedicated to celebrating the freedom to read and the power of diverse stories. This month’s featured book is Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson — a powerful story that shows the lengths we can go to cast off our chains, both physical and spiritual. Recommended for grades 6–10, Chains invites readers to reflect on courage, freedom, and resilience.

At a time when more books are being challenged or banned than ever before — especially those by and about people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community — it’s vital to stand up for the right to read. The First Amendment protects access to ideas, and public schools and libraries must represent the broadest range of voices and experiences. Every reader deserves to see themselves reflected in the stories on our shelves. Books spark empathy, inspire change, and can even save lives.

Please RSVP here on the website. The book is available at The Bookshelf on Church and can be reserved online. We encourage participants to read the book ahead of time and come prepared lend your voice to this important conversation and celebrate the freedom to read!
