NICC Virtual Class: Brain Health Summit: Destigmatizing Brain Health

Join virtually Tuesday, October 19, 2021 from 9am-1pm for the Brain Health Summit: Destigmatizing Brain Health.
Enter URL Northeast Iowa Community College (nicc.edu)and insert class #  to register for class #84811

Destigmatizing Brain Health Through Compassion
Compassion is the act of recognizing the suffering of others and taking action to help them. It's what Sean Astin proposes to lessen the stigmas surrounding mental illness, and he understands that stigma well having been raised by his mother, actress Patty Duke, who openly experienced brain health issues. Sean will emphasize the importance of building compassionate communities to destigmatize mental illness and offer strategies as simple as actively listening or knowing the appropriate language to use to support someone with a mental illness. He will share his deeply personal story of carrying on his mother's legacy of championing brain health.

The Stigma of Mental Illness
Mental illness has been misunderstood and stigmatized for as long as it has existed. We will explore the origins of understanding mental illness, how to correct negative perceptions and misinformation, and learn how cultural bias impacts prevention, treatment and recovery. We will also discuss how misinformation and stigma impact individuals who have an illness and their families.
