Founded in 1997 under the direction of Columbian native Ana Ines King, the Latin Ballet of Virginia is a professional dance company and school of dance, providing multicultural dance programs, instruction, and performances for a diverse community. From the passionate fury of flamenco to tango’s forbidden heat, the polished elegance of classical ballet to the earthen power of modern dance, the Latin Ballet of Virginia uses the expressive beauty of movement to weave the tales and traditions that are the heart and soul of Hispanic culture.

Hosted by Lancaster Virginia Historical Society and The Nickens Family.

A panel of Nickens descendants, coordinated by Francine Aytes Hunter and Brenda Campbell, will speak about their ancestor and their experiences of discovering and commemorating their family history. They will discuss various ways to engage with the past, including their efforts to obtain a Virginia Historical Highway Marker that was dedicated in 2022. The Honorable Armistead S. Nickens (ca. 1836-1906) was born into a free family of color and his ancestors included at least 12 veterans of the Revolutionary War. He served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1871-1875, becoming Lancaster County’s first Black elected official and one of the first Black Virginians in State Government.
