3/1/2024
Friday, March 1, starting at 5pm we will have a Seafood Fest. Our menu will include all of your favorites plus some new ones. (Stay tuned on our Facebook page for that release) We will have drink and happy hour specials too. No tickets required, families welcome. Take outs available. 

Starting at 7pm, we will fire up the mics and have karaoke! All ages welcome! This is a free event.

Join us for a program about animals surviving the winter on Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 a.m.  We will meet at the Prairie Rose Park office.  We will be making “animals” (out of liquid Jell-o) and then finding a place outside for your animals to take shelter for the winter.  After a while we will check the containers and if your Jell-o is still liquid, your animal survived.  If it gelled, then you animal didn’t make it.  All supplies will be provided.

SPARK! is cultural programming designed for people in early to mid-stages of memory loss to attend with their family or care partners. Programs feature interactive exhibit experiences in a welcoming environment with trained individuals who engage participants in lively discussions, object handling, and other multi-sensory activities. Programs are free and open to the public. These events are sponsored by the Shelby County Health Foundations and the Shelby County Community Chest.

On Saturday, March 23rd at 1 pm, students from the University of Nebraska at Omaha will be performing at the Museum of Danish America on the Victor Borge piano. The students will be performing music from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland in an exploration and celebration of Nordic music. The students have been guided by Associate Professor Dr. Kristín Jónína Taylor, an Icelandic-American pianist with a passion for sharing Nordic history. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available after the performance.

Attention Hunters. Hunter Safety Education Online Field Day, Saturday March 23, 2024 from 8am to Noon. Nishna Bend Recreation Area
(approx. 1½ miles SE of Harlan Municipal Airport). 

Anyone born after Jan 1, 1972 must complete a hunter safety education course in order to obtain an Iowa hunting license. (must be at least 12 years old to take the class).

A signs of spring hike will be held at Prairie Rose State Park, 680 Road M47, Harlan on Sunday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m. (weather permitting).  If it is raining or will be raining shortly after start time of the hike, we will cancel.  We will meet behind campsite 85 and head out on the dam trail to look for signs of spring.  Any cancellations will be posted on the Friends of Prairie Rose Facebook page.

Gridshock is a riveting documentary exposing the hidden and disturbing reality behind the sex trafficking demand in Iowa. The Shelby County Sheriff's Office will be on site to answer question's and speak to a relatable case.
